COMMON PROBLEMS WITH BRAKE DRUMSGrease Stained DrumsBrake drums with discolored spots on the brakingsurface, and oil or grease splattered on the brakeassembly indicates over-lubrication of the cam orcamshaft, or by an oil seal failure. Correct thisproblem. By repairing the source of the oil or greaseleak, clean the drum and replace soaked linings.Cracked DrumsA drum which has cracked completely through a section of the braking surface must be replaced immediately.A cracked drum is not repairable! Cracked drums are caused by one or more of the following:1. Excessive heating and cooling2. Excessive shoe pressureRepeated cracking of this type may indicate one or moreof the following:1. Dragging brakes2. Inadequately designed drums for the application3. Inadequately designed braking system for the application4. Incorrect brake balance of the vehicle5. Driver abuseThe total braking system of the vehicle should be checked thoroughly, paying attention to the following:1. Proper friction ratings2. Proper valving and pluming3. Proper brake balance4. Missing linings and/or brake system components.Heat CheckingA broken network of fine hairline cracks on the brakingsurface of the drum, is a normal phenomenon of brakingsurfaces. It is caused by regular heating and cooling ofthe surface. Heat checking does not impair brakeperformance; but you should examine heat checksfrequently to make sure they have not grown deepenough to weaken the drum.Oversized DrumsIf the brake surface diameter is in excess of it’s specifiedmaximum diameter, replace the drum immediately. Itmay be necessary to replace drums in pairs to assureproper brake drum balance and braking efficiency. If the linings show irregular wear replace them.1-8
