YOUNG ENTERPRISETHE SELECTION PROCESSThere are 24 places in the two companies that operate, but asthe scheme has been very popular in the past, it is necessary toadopt a selection process.• The first stage involves completing an application form.• If your application is successful you are called for an interviewand a reference may be taken up.• The interviews are held in the second week of the Michaelmasterm and successful candidates will form the two companies.Staff from the Business & Economics Department will overseethe two companies. A YE Link Advisor from the commercialsector and a Link Teacher from <strong>Epsom</strong> <strong>College</strong> will assist eachcompany.The activity takes up two teaching periods per week.YE is also included in the activity programme and one sessionwill be included in a pupil’s activity programme. Work is alsoundertaken outside of these times.There are regional and national competitions that pupils canenter.Further information and an application form will be sent outto pupils in the summer term at the end of the GCSE exams.The scheme involves an OCR exam undertaken in May.COURSE OUTLINEIn the YE scheme pupils work together as a company andwill have the power to make all the decisions associated withits running, including marketing, production and financialmanagement.Pupils will also be responsible for paying YE VAT and taxesand the company can decide on how any profits will be sharedor allocated.HIGHER EDUCATION AND CAREERSPupils can discuss this qualification on their UCAS application,and employers recognise this qualification.SUBJECT COMBINATIONSPupils in the past in the YE companies have studied a rangeof A levels. Pupils who undertake the Business A level, will beable to bring their Marketing, and Finance subject knowledge tothe sessions.CAREERSThere is an extensive programme of Careers Events duringLower <strong>Sixth</strong> in preparation for Upper <strong>Sixth</strong> and life beyond<strong>Epsom</strong>.The careers office is located within the sixth form centre.Themain emphasis of careers advice at <strong>Sixth</strong> <strong>Form</strong> is in selectingappropriate further education courses. Pupils are encouragedto drop-in to see the careers team informally or to make anappointment individually.the UCAS application procedure, gap year opportunities andthe world of work. There are sessions dedicated to HigherEducation with a variety of guest speakers, an evening focusingon the World of Work, as well as opportunities to visitUniversity Open Days and specialised events for applicationsto Medical Schools and Oxbridge. There is an extensive programmeof workshops in preparation for university application,covering the issues of decision making, UCAS registration andpersonal statements.If they have not already taken it there is an opportunity to takethe Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO)/Futurewise Careers Guidance Tests. All pupils are enrolled inthis programme in the fifth form.At the start of the Upper <strong>Sixth</strong> a day is given over to UCASapplications. Interview preparation is given on an individualbasis as required. Support is readily available throughout theUCAS cycle.In the Lower <strong>Sixth</strong> there is a varied programme of eventslooking at life beyond <strong>Epsom</strong>. A large number of Lower <strong>Sixth</strong>pupils take part in Futurewise careers courses during the Easterand summer vacations.The careers programme looks closely atFinally, when exam results are published in August, theDepartment is staffed to give help to any who need it. The vastmajority of pupils make successful applications and achieve theirfirst or second university of choice.31
