Fine Arts Seminar, a class of Visual Art, Dance, Theatre, Film, and Music seniors, have assembled this installation for our Butzel Gallery over the past several weeks.Installation is an artistic genre of three dimensional works that are often site-specificand designed to transform the perception of the space.Students brought in hundreds of objects with connections to fond childhoodmemories. With many of the objects we had good, old fashioned show and tellwhere students told the “story” of their objects to the class. Students elaborated ontheir objects through the creation of hundreds of written short stories.SHOW AND TELLAfter studying the art of Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger, the text of these storieswere manipulated and merged with original photos that the students had taken ofself portraits without their recognizable images. These photo/text collages aredisplayed throughout the gallery. Their objects are bagged and hung from theceiling with yellow, red, and blue string. Viewers walk through the space, collages inhand, through passageways made in between the hanging objects, enjoying the“treasure hunt” experience of connecting story with object. Viewers become part ofthe work as their presence moves the bagged objects and changes their shadowson the walls further transforming the space. A soundtrack of students saying theirfavorite lines from their stories set to sound effects brings a unique sounddimension to the work. The most intriguing lines are on display outside the galleryso people passing by can make quick connections between word and image. This installation celebrates the memories of our youth assembled by young artistswith one foot firmly in their childhood while their other foot advances towardsadulthood. For more information on the show contact Tom Sarnacki:sarnackit@Schenectady.k12.ny.us
