Questions and AnswersQ: What is it?The <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>Artist</strong>/<strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> (MATI)is a professional development programfor teachers and school adm<strong>in</strong>istrators. Itwas established <strong>in</strong> 1994 as a program ofthe <strong>Maryland</strong> State <strong>Arts</strong> Council (MSAC),an agency of the <strong>Maryland</strong> Department ofBus<strong>in</strong>ess and Economic Development, <strong>in</strong> partnershipwith the <strong>Maryland</strong> State Departmentof <strong>Education</strong> (MSDE). It is co-funded by theNational Endowment for the <strong>Arts</strong>.Q: Why was the <strong>Institute</strong>established?The <strong>in</strong>stitute was established to explore anddemystify the arts as a force <strong>in</strong> a child’s developmentand enable teachers to become moreknowledgeable, creative, and skillful <strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>gthe arts to engage children <strong>in</strong> active learn<strong>in</strong>g.Q: Why are the arts so important foreffective teach<strong>in</strong>g?Children have different styles of learn<strong>in</strong>g,depend<strong>in</strong>g on their natural abilities and experience.To teach all of the children <strong>in</strong> a class,not just some of them, the teacher must usemultiple teach<strong>in</strong>g strategies. The arts canopen a way to strategies that correspond tovarious <strong>in</strong>dividual learn<strong>in</strong>g styles and make itpossible for the teacher to engage every child<strong>in</strong> active learn<strong>in</strong>g.Q: How is the <strong>in</strong>stitute conducted?An <strong>in</strong>tensive residential program on a collegecampus is followed by several <strong>in</strong>-servicesessions at participat<strong>in</strong>g school sites dur<strong>in</strong>gthe school year. <strong>Teacher</strong>s and adm<strong>in</strong>istratorsfrom a participat<strong>in</strong>g school work as a teamto develop a plan for <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g the arts <strong>in</strong>tothe school’s curriculum <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g year.Q: What happens <strong>in</strong> the summersession?Participants attend performances, discussions,and hands-on workshops that enablethem to explore the various roles of differentart forms <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g. Thearts are discussed as separate content areasas well as the manner <strong>in</strong> which they can be<strong>in</strong>tegrated with other academic subjects.Relationships among different arts discipl<strong>in</strong>esare also exam<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ways that theyaffect children’s motivation, learn<strong>in</strong>g, comprehension,development of critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, andmastery of problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g skills.Q: Which arts discipl<strong>in</strong>es are covered?Dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and creativewrit<strong>in</strong>g are exam<strong>in</strong>ed as dist<strong>in</strong>ct contentareas <strong>in</strong> relation to the State of <strong>Maryland</strong>’scontent and achievement standards.Q: Will the <strong>Institute</strong> improve myprofessional stand<strong>in</strong>g?Participants will earn three MSDE cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>gprofessional development (CPD) creditsupon completion of the summer session,follow-up sessions dur<strong>in</strong>g the school year,and presentation of evidence document<strong>in</strong>gthe application of knowledge and skills <strong>in</strong> theclassroom and its impact on student learn<strong>in</strong>g.Participants who elect the CPD option are noteligible to earn graduate credit hours for thesame experience.Q: Can University of <strong>Maryland</strong>Graduate Credit be earned by MATIparticipants?Participants who register for EDCI 688I,Special Topics <strong>in</strong> Curriculum and Instruction,will receive three graduate credits from theUniversity of <strong>Maryland</strong> upon successfully complet<strong>in</strong>gthe course. Registration for the courseis restricted to those participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>Artist</strong>/<strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g thesummer of 2012. Dr. Margaret Walker, lecturer<strong>in</strong> art education, University of <strong>Maryland</strong>, willact as the course <strong>in</strong>structor for participantswho register for the graduate credit option.These credits can apply toward the TowsonUniversity <strong>Arts</strong> Integration certificate. Uponsuccessful completion of MATI and courserequirements, participants will receive anofficial University of <strong>Maryland</strong> transcriptthat shall reflect the three graduate credits.Further questions about the course may bedirected to Dr. Walker at mwalker8@umd.edu.Participants who elect the graduate creditoption are not eligible to receive CPD creditsfor the same experience. The researchpaper/unit plan will be due <strong>in</strong> mid-August.Q: How do I apply for GraduateCredit?Participants accepted by the MATI programwho have earned an undergraduate degreeare eligible to register for 3 graduate creditsthrough the University of <strong>Maryland</strong>’s GraduateSchool of <strong>Education</strong>. Application for admission <strong>in</strong>cludesthe application for fund<strong>in</strong>g.Q: Who is eligible to enroll?Grades K-8 elementary and middle schoolteachers and adm<strong>in</strong>istrators enroll either asschool team members or as <strong>in</strong>dividuals. Teamapplications from public schools that <strong>in</strong>cludea pr<strong>in</strong>cipal or other adm<strong>in</strong>istrator and firsttime participants will be given preference. Arefundable registration fee of $500 per schoolteam is required regardless of the number ofteam members. This fee will be refunded tothe school at the end of the summer session.Grants to support school teams are no longeravailable. Individual participants will becharged a $200 registration fee, refundable <strong>in</strong>full follow<strong>in</strong>g completion of all requirementsat the end of the summer session. Failure toregister as specified or complete all requirementsof the summer session will result <strong>in</strong>forfeiture of school and <strong>in</strong>dividual registrationfees. A check <strong>in</strong> the amount of the registrationfee must be sent with the application(s) ormay be sent separately if application(s) aresent electronically.Q: What is a “school team?”A school team consists of at least threemembers of the school’s staff, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g anadm<strong>in</strong>istrator. Ideally, the team should <strong>in</strong>cludean arts specialist on the school’s faculty, thepr<strong>in</strong>cipal, and as many classroom or otheracademic subject teachers as are <strong>in</strong>terested.The more teachers <strong>in</strong>cluded, the stronger theteam. In special circumstances, a PTA representative,such as a cultural arts chairpersonor other PTA officer, may be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> theschool team.Q: Are <strong>in</strong>dividual admissionsallowed?Individual teachers, pr<strong>in</strong>cipals, and otheradm<strong>in</strong>istrators are eligible for admission providedopen<strong>in</strong>gs rema<strong>in</strong> available after schoolteams are registered. Academic content teachersfrom any elementary or middle school aswell as art, music, dance and drama teachersand other specialists are welcome.
