Lollapalooza 2008August 1-3, 2008Grant Park – Chicago, ILLollapalooza returned to Chicago for it’s fourth consecutive yearthis summer and, boy, did it come back even bigger. Perry Farrelland company hardly skimped on the headliners delivering Radiohead,Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, Kanye West, and Nine Inch Nailson the main roster.This year, as expected, Friday’s line-up sold out in advance to the75,000 maximum capacity with Radiohead closing out the openingnight. In the end, 225,000 people attended the festival during itsthree days in Chicago’s massive Grant Park, nestled between thecity’s skyline and lakefront. Every stage, large and small, had a seaof on-lookers. It seemed apparent that the crowds of people weretaking advantage of every artist and act possible, maximizing theirLolla experience to the fullest.FLOGGING MOLLYCAT POWERKANYE WESTThe jam-packed shenanigans came with a price of course. Onedaytickets cost $80 while the three-day pass was a hefty $190. Butask any of the festivalgoers and they’ll swear it was worth everypenny.Saturday followed on Friday’s heels with another sold out crowd.The day offered up acts such as Explosions in the Sky, Brand New,Lupe Fiasco, Toadies, The Ting-Ting’s, Battles, and Broken SocialScene… just to name a few. Rage Against the Machine was, ofcourse, the highly anticipated act that night performing to an audiencethat was jacked up on a combination of adrenaline, testosterone,and alcohol… and more than likely some other unmentionablesubstances. Several times the band had to pause between songswhile lead vocalist Zack de la Rocha pleaded with the crowd to takefive to ten steps back. People abided in order to avoid a shortenedperformance although all the times Rage had to stop definitely cutinto their set list. Needless to say, the emergency medical teamwas busy for those one and half hours. Outside the gates, anaudience of listeners gathered in thepark across the street, sprawled out onblankets simply appreciating the music.Conversely, local Chicago rockers,Wilco, also headlined on the oppositestage to a much more subdued but lessimpressive crowd.The festivities closed out with a bangon Sunday with performances byFlogging Molly, Saul Williams, Girl Talk,Chromeo, Blues Traveler, GnarlsBarkley, Love & Rockets… again – justsome amongst many more. But itseemed evident that both NIN and KanyeWest were on the minds of most people.Both were closing out Lolla on oppositestages, and while dedicated fans hadmade their decision to watch the entiretyof the show of their preferred artist, manytrekked the 25 minute walk betweenstages to catch a glimpse of both –expecting each to put on a performanceguaranteed to amaze the masses.And amaze they did. Rumors of BarackObama making a guest appearance proved false, but that did notdeter from a killer performance by the talented lyricist who was backedup by singers, percussion, a DJ set up, as well as, a brilliant lightshow.With Lola selling out for the first time as a “Chicago Festival”, it’s hardto deny the continuous success of what has truly become a celebratedevent.
