ten feet with an audience of about ten other riders. Besides thenormal questions to make sure I was all right, a number of riderschimed in to tell me they were both amused and impressed withthe acrobatics they had just witnessed. I good-naturedly asked“Where’s a video camera when you need one?”The remainder of day two is a blur. Marc and I had decided earlythat we would ride our own race today. I would occasionally closein on him and then fall back. The only real memories I have fromthe day are being struck once again by the beauty of Costa Ricaand the friendliness of the people. At points during the race Iwould be lost in my thoughts and noticed giant blue butterflies. Atfirst, they were so big I thought I was hallucinating, but I determinedthey were real and amazingly beautiful. If I had to pick aplace to suffer on the bike, I had made the right choice.I ended the second day making the cutoff time for the stage withtime to spare. Marc had come in about 20 minutes ahead of meand was still going strong. I was excited to have the extra time toget cleaned up, eat, and relax. Perhaps the best feeling was thatmy appetite had returned. I wolfed down everything they put onmy plate and was looking for more. The thought that I was able tocomfortably put food in my body and had finished well boostedmy confidence for tomorrow.DAY THREE. While I did not know it yet, this day was to play moreto my training compared to the other days and would be the bestday of the race for me. Instead of the sharp climbs of the previousdays, this day would be a long steady climb to 10,000 feet upthe side of the Irazu Volcano, and a screaming descent on rockygravel and paved roads. This day made it clear how important thisrace is to the Costa Ricans. This is their mountain bike Tour deFrance. The difference is not only the professional cyclists are theheroes; the any-man riders like me were getting the same enthusiasticcheers along the route. We came to a steep cobbled sectionthat was lined by spectators yelling and cheering all the riders.Their encouragement pushed the riders to do their best to stay onthe bike despite the steepness of the hill. Most had to give up andwalk, but the people continued to yell. They seemed to recognizethe Americans in the group and would shout encouragement inEnglish. One fan in particular was especially enthusiastic, yelling“I love you!” as American riders passed by. As I passed by, the fanrepeated “I love you!” I looked in the direction it came from andwinked. The crowd erupted in laughter as I continued to push mybike up the hill.The checkpoints came a little faster and easier than they had onthe first two stages. We climbed higher, the weather cooled, andthe clouds closed in. This was a welcome change, allowing meto exert myself a little more comfortably as we gained altitude.Eventually I had to put on a vest to keep warm and prepare forthe descent down the other side of the mountain. One welcomediscovery at the checkpoints was Agua Dulce, hot tea made fromsugar cane. It felt great at the high altitude checkpoints.Marc and I arrived at the final checkpoint before the big descentinto Turriabla together. It had started to rain a little bit. There werestill hard core spectators at the checkpoint that wanted to help theracers, which I was not used to. They were interested in our bikes,equipment, and clothing. They asked for pictures as if they werestanding next to big stars. As we prepared to depart I was havingtrouble getting my gloves on my damaged hands, and the peoplewere right there trying to help me get myself back together and onmy way. We started off down the long descent. Talk of the rocky,steep descent with baby-head-sized rocks and limited visibilityhad us a little concerned about what lay ahead. Both of us wereglad to have the descent, but the technicality of the terrain wouldplace significant demand on our upper body and injured arms.We agreed to go somewhat cautiously and not get too separatedin case one of us crashed. Like many things in life, the rumor andstories were not as bad as reality. We gained confidence and speedas we got a better feel for the rocky terrain. Occasionally Marc orI had to stop to give our arms a break. We continued until we hitpavement and cleared the bad weather.At this point we began what was, for me, one of the more flat-outfun sections of the entire ride. We were still miles from the finishline, but it was nice pavement on a long descent along a mountainroad. Marc and I instantly opened up the speed to finish strong. Itseemed to go on for miles as we gathered speed, easily exceeding40 miles per hour and passing buses and cars as we plummetedtowards town. After so much time climbing steep hills and goingdown rocky or muddy hills, it was nice to just go fast, testing theability of our tires to hold on to the road as we leaned through thecorners tucked for aerodynamic advantage. At some points wewere leaning into the corners so far it felt as if we were riding sportmotorcycles. We eventually hit the flats and time trialed into thefinish. Another day in the books – time to clean up and eat.DAY FOUR. Day four began a little later than the previous three days.It was a good thing as the cumulative fatigue of three days of hardmountain bike riding were definitely evident as I woke up and beganmoving around. The weariness was balanced with excitementas I believed the worst was over for me. Day four was going to belong, at around 70 miles, and hot, but it was going to be flat formost of the way to Port Limon on the Atlantic Coast. While notoverconfident, I fought the thought in my head saying “I got this!”The final stage started with the peloton moving through towntogether. This was the only day that all the riders were able to staywith the pro’s as the riders moved to the final short, sharp climbsof the last stage. We moved through town together escorted by dirtbikes, all-terrain vehicles, and four wheelers. As the group startedhitting the beginning of the climbs, the stronger riders began toseparate themselves from the pack. Vehicles following the ridersbecame interspersed as we made the last steep paved climbs anddescents of La Ruta.The next challenge La Ruta threw at us was the infamous railroadtracks - over 20 kilometers of riding in the middle of these tracks.I did not handle this too well to start. The spacing and the depthof the gravel between the ties were not consistent, and within 100yards of getting on the track, I caught my front wheel and wasthrown violently over the handlebars onto the ground. My helmetsaved me from serious injury, but part of my handlebar broke inthe fall. Everything else was OK. Marc caught up to me. We con-26
