The Dean’s Breakfast The Dean’s breakfast was an opportunity to thank Gala sponsors, committee members and volunteers. Without each of their contributions the Gala would not be possible, and the funds that are raised to continue the important research being done would also be limited. Our Faculty has a long tradition of excellence in oral health research. One such research area in which the Faculty has assumed leadership is the diagnosis and treatment of craniofacial deformities. The costs associated with research, particularly clinical research, have escalated over the years while funding has become more difficult to obtain, particularly in our present economic environment. message from the dss president Celebrating Teamwork and Commitment A s DSS President and a graduating member of the Class of 2009, I look back and appreciate the many different experiences that have allowed me to mature as an individual in dental school, and the remarkable opportunities I have been given. Here are some of the many activities that the DSS and student body was able to embark on at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year. Our thirteenth annual Dental Students’ Society (DSS) and Alumni Association Awards of Distinction Night was held on March 30th at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry. We were able to acknowledge and honour faculty, staff and students who have made an outstanding and positive contribution to the overall atmosphere within the Faculty of Dentistry. We also hosted the second annual President’s Cup between the UWO and U of T dentistry hockey teams at Varsity Arena on April 4th in an effort to raise money and awareness for cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital. It was a fun night even though UWO won the game! Thank you to all the sponsors who helped support this event such as the ODA, CDA, U of T alumni association, DSS and the ZIP Fraternity. Community outreach at our Faculty has always been an important component of our student life. I hope that each one of us continues in giving back to our community in one way or another in the future. In the months of March and April, the student body took part in the BRUSHAMANIA program where we provided oral hygiene to various different schools in the region. I would like to thank Ali Sigal, a first year dental student, for initiating a non-profit organization this year called Oral Health, Total Health, which is affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital. The purpose of this organization is to advocate, educate and improve oral health care for persons with special needs, since it is one of the top un-met health needs facing this population today. This year’s Alumni Mentorship Program was a great experience for everyone who took part in it. Thank you to all the alumni and student mentors who helped out with the program. Thank you also to our awesome Dentantics Reps, Lani Kraus and Cara Lindsay, along with the Class of 2010 and the rest of the student body who showcased their many talents in this year’s Beatles-themed Dentantics production, “Dentalmania.” All proceeds from the event were donated to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation to establish a fund for Oral Cancer Research. Dentantics is just one of many examples of the phenomenal teamwork and commitment demonstrated by our dental student body outside the classroom that enables us to engage in such creative and admirable initiatives. I would like to wish future Dentantics Reps, Shayna Levitan and Elena Gershenzon, and the Class of 2011 all the best with next year’s show. It was a privilege to be a part of the 2008-2009 DSS Council, which was made up of a very creative, motivated and dedicated core of students. Thank you for always being by my side in every initiative that we took, and for making this year such a success for the entire student body. Congratulations to next year’s DSS president, Fanar Swaida. I hope you will be as fortunate as I was to work with such an awesome DSS Council and student body. Thank you once again to Dean Mock, Dr. Carroll, the faculty, staff and alumni association who helped the student body in every way possible despite our many demands and needs. You are an instrumental part in the education process and life experiences that have helped us to grow as individuals and future health practitioners.
