Gardner, M.D. Pediatrician from Billings Montana: When my friends Rich and RondaKotter first gave us a tape to listen to, we thought magnets were about the hokiest idea we’d ever heard! Then a couple of years later, when managed care cut Stan’s practice dramatically, we decided to look intoother options, and asked Rich how his Nikken business was doing. Rich tried a back flex on Stan’s back, which had been aching for several months. Stan noticed it stopped aching within a few minutes. He wasamazed, and decided this was something important to study. Once we discovered the incredible benefitsof these products, we wanted to share them with everyone we care about (which is everyone!).Stan’s Medical Background: Stan studied pediatrics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He haspracticed medicine since 1984, when he completed his residency. He served as Chairman of theDepartment of Pediatrics at Humana Hospital Davis North for four years. Stan’s interests expanded intoworking with children who had learning difficulties. He did a mini-fellowship with Mel Levine, M.D., atthe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1990. He also did training in treatment of adultlearning difficulties with University of Massachusetts at Worchester. Stan was medical director at theAdult and Child Study Center in Billings, Montana, from 1992 to 1998. Since 1998 he has worked withNikken full time. I handinjured my back quite severely in a mountaineering accident and for 5 years had suffered miserably I hurtall the time. I couldn't sleep for more than 3-4 hours a night. Life was not much fun. In my attempt todeal with the agony and still live a reasonable active life I was taking lots of medicine. As a doctor thatwas the only thing I knew. I had a reaction to one of those medicines that nearly killed me. It was that lifethreatening reaction that opened my mind to the possibilities of alternative solutions. I knew I had to finda different way to address my problem. It was right after that I met a physical therapist, Jerry White, whogot me on a sleep system, magsteps, and a back flex. I was amazed because within several weeks I feltbetter than I had for years. I couldn't understand how or why, all I knew was it worked for me. The agonywas gone, I could sleep through the night for the first time in years, and I was so happy and grateful forthat. I felt like I'd been given a gift. Instead of a life dominated by aching back, I was free to be me. Thebusiness made a lot of sense to us, but at first we didn't think we had the time to get involved. I had a verybusy practice and was working 60-70 hours a week. Nancy was working 3-4 days a week. We had 4teenagers and just started an alpaca ranching operation, so needless to say we had a lot on our plate. Asyou can imagine with our schedules, Nancy and I didn't see much of each other and our family life waschaotic. I was fascinated however, by the concepts of leverage and reproductive, residual income. Forsome time I had wanted to reduce my hours at the hospital, but 4 children headed toward college, therewas just no way that was going to happen soon. When we took a closer look at the business model, itdawned on us that this could be the answer to our prayers. Maybe, just maybe, we could get Nancy backhome and I could cut back on my hectic schedule. Never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed how
