elcomeAtheme that seems to run through this edition of the Bulletin isthat of new births and beginnings. BNA has a new logo, a newPresident and a new Chief Executive. For those yet to spot oursleek new logo, see the cover or p21. New President David Nutttakes over from Trevor Robbins in April. Part of Trevor’s legacy, who hasskilfully steered BNA through a critical phase, is the installation of a ChiefExecutive for the Society. Meet Ian Varndell, our new C.E., on p5.Many members may not know how BNA first began; I was intrigued tolearn that its birthplace was a certain London pub (p20). Find out how theneuroscience career of BNA member David McAlpine began, with his ‘lifeon the page’, on p15.Then there is the miracle of birth itself. Comedian Robin Ince describeshow the birth of his son, and watching a baby’s brain develop skills, awareness, and a sense of self, inspired Robin to delve into cognitiveneuroscience (p25).Meanwhile, the neuroscience community is being confronted withunwelcome new challenges. Funding cuts, tuition fees, and the withdrawalof pharmaceutical companies from the UK are pressing concerns for allmembers. BNA is acting on your behalf; find out how on p6.To end on a positive note, BNA’s 2011 national meeting looks set to bethe best ever, and exciting plans are afoot for a new Festival of BritishNeuroscience.
