Potential Next StepsMany pressing areas <strong>for</strong> future work were identified during <strong>the</strong> discussions.Hopefully, all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m will be taken up over time. In <strong>the</strong> near term, however, <strong>the</strong>following specific actions will be taken by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Yale</strong> Program on <strong>Strategies</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Future</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong> and LTA:5.1 at yaleGraduate student research: During <strong>the</strong> 2006-2007 school year, <strong>Yale</strong> students will beassigned to many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> topics above, both as paid interns (as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BerkleyScholars Program) and as clinical projects (through <strong>the</strong> course on <strong>Conservation</strong><strong>Strategies</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Environmental Protection Clinic, o<strong>the</strong>r courses and independentprojects). Wherever possible, organizational “clients” will be sought <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>se projects,including from <strong>the</strong> workshop participants. Specific topics will be chosen inconsultation with those organizations and <strong>the</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mal advisory committee <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Yale</strong> Program. The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research will be disseminated through <strong>the</strong> <strong>Yale</strong> andLTA networks.Capacity building on business and environment: As more <strong>Yale</strong> students expressinterest in trying to link better environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance with pr<strong>of</strong>itable investments,<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> has been expanding its programs in <strong>the</strong>se areas. This includes<strong>of</strong>fering more courses in <strong>the</strong> basics <strong>of</strong> business and finance, as well as more clinicalprojects and specialized courses. In addition, <strong>the</strong> Deans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Environment andManagement Schools have agreed to invest even fur<strong>the</strong>r by creating a joint Center <strong>for</strong>Business and <strong>the</strong> Environment, including support <strong>for</strong> new research, joint programs,executive courses and o<strong>the</strong>r activities. Pr<strong>of</strong>itable investments in more sustainable landuse will be an important part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se activities. The results <strong>of</strong> this workshop will befed directly into this process at <strong>Yale</strong>.<strong>Future</strong> workshops: Having now co-sponsored this broad “drinking from a fire hose”dialogue across <strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong> issues facing land conservation in <strong>the</strong> US, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Yale</strong>Program will need to decide where future conferences will generate <strong>the</strong> most value bytaking a “deep dive” into a particular topic.
