1. What did you th<strong>in</strong>k about Laura's cous<strong>in</strong>, Charley? Do you th<strong>in</strong>k he was helpful to<br />

Uncle Henry and Pa? Why or why not? Have you ever heard <strong>the</strong> story of <strong>the</strong> "Boy<br />

Who Cried Wolf?" Do you th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> story of Charley and <strong>the</strong> yellow jackets sounds<br />

<strong>the</strong> same? Do you th<strong>in</strong>k Charley was sorry he tricked Pa and Uncle Henry? Do you<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k he learned a lesson? What was it?<br />

2. A pioneer family had to work hard, yet <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> skills to make many th<strong>in</strong>gs. Ma<br />

made straw hats for her family. She also made cheese. Can you th<strong>in</strong>k of o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs that Laura's family made for <strong>the</strong>mselves that we usually buy <strong>in</strong> a store<br />

nowadays? Are our lives easier or harder than Laura's family? If you could live <strong>in</strong><br />

Laura's time or now, which would you choose? Why?<br />

3. Were you surprised that <strong>the</strong> wonderful thresh<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e was "run" by horses?<br />

Can you see where we get <strong>the</strong> expression "horsepower" to mean a powerful motor or<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e? In Laura's time, mach<strong>in</strong>es really used horse power to move <strong>the</strong>m. Even<br />

today, we say a car motor has “horsepower” even though we know <strong>the</strong>re are no<br />

horses <strong>in</strong>side our car's eng<strong>in</strong>e! Can you th<strong>in</strong>k of any o<strong>the</strong>r expressions that have<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir roots <strong>in</strong> history?<br />

4. Laura is glad at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> book that "Now is now. It can never be a long time<br />

ago." Can you th<strong>in</strong>k of a time <strong>in</strong> your life when you were glad that "now is now?"<br />

What happened? What made that time special?<br />

5. What do you th<strong>in</strong>k about Laura's life? Did it sound as if she had a happy life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Big</strong> <strong>Woods</strong>? Is it a place you would have wanted to live? Did Laura's writ<strong>in</strong>g make<br />

you feel as if you did live back <strong>the</strong>n? What was your favorite part of <strong>the</strong> book?<br />
