The Vice-Chancellor, Andrew Hamilton, said “This remarkableachievement bears eloquent witness to the esteem and commitment that our academicexcellence inspires all over the world … Every gift is important, helping to fund vitalposts, scholarships and bursaries, ground-breaking research, and the buildings andequipment necessary to support academic excellence.”New facility unveiled for BodleianOn 7 October, the Bodleian Library unveiled its new £26 million Book StorageFacility, capable of holding over 8 million volumes on 153 miles of shelving. The newbook warehouse, in South Marston, near Swindon, will store items from the Library’scollections that had overwhelmed the existing bookstacks. Over the next year nearly 6million books will be moved, in what will be the biggest book move in the Bodleian’shistory.Inaugural lecture from Sir Trevor NunnSir Trevor Nunn has delivered his inaugural speech as the Cameron MackintoshVisiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre. During the lecture, the former ArtisticDirector of the Royal Shakespeare Company commented that <strong>Oxford</strong> has been forcenturies a vital centre for Shakespeare scholarship. He told his audience: “Manystudents at school and university still inwardly groan at the mention of Shakespeare.My aim is to turn you on to Shakespeare.”Frankenstein at the heart of new Bodleian exhibitionThe original manuscripts of the novel Frankenstein have gone on display at theBodleian as part of their new exhibition dedicated to Mary Shelley, her husbandPercy Bysshe Shelley and Mary’s parents, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft.The exhibition, a collaboration between the Bodleian and the New York PublicLibrary, charts the history of a family “blessed with genius but marred by tragedy”.
