Amethyst 15thJuly 1877FREDERICK AUGUSTIN COATHUPEborn at Birdcombe Court in 1839 Frederick passed hismaster's ticket at Bristol during 1871 <strong>and</strong> was appointedmate of the liner CELT. He went on to serve as a mate in theEUROPEAN <strong>and</strong> SAXON prior to being appointed master ofthe BRITON in 1873 in which year he became master of theAFRICAN.<strong>The</strong> AFRICAN was built in 1873 by Key of Kinghorn <strong>and</strong> wasemployed as a mail steamer between Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Capeuntil 1881.Frederick left the employ of the Union Line <strong>and</strong> joined theirkeen rival the Castle Line. He reappears in 1877 as Mate ofthe COURLAND, then, in the same year, the TAYMOUTHCASTLE <strong>and</strong> his final vessel appears to be the BALMORALCASTLE in which he served as mate until 1879.William Ferguson Knight finishes his researches with anumber of questions6
