Garcia,PhD, Dean of the School ofHumanities, gave a fitting tributeto a former colleague and thisyear’s National Artist BienvenidoLumbera, PhD on September 22at the Escaler Hall, Science EducationComplex.The program, aptly dubbedBienvenidos: Ang Muling Pagbabalik,commemorated Dr. Lumbera’swork in literature, criticism, popularculture, and national consciousness,and his contributionsto the school, serving as the chairof the English Department in the1970s before Martial Law was<strong>de</strong>clared.A team hea<strong>de</strong>d by Soledad S.Reyes, PhD, and including DaniloM. Reyes of the English Department,Jerry Respeto, GaryDevilles, and Richard <strong>de</strong> Guzmanof the Filipino Department, wastasked to <strong>de</strong>sign the program.With the help of stu<strong>de</strong>nt organizationslike Entablado,Tanghalang <strong>Ateneo</strong>, Indak of<strong>Ateneo</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Manila</strong> High School,faculty of the School of Humanities,and the <strong>Ateneo</strong> Staff AssociationChorale, the program wasa success, overwhelming guests,especially Dr. Lumbera, as hehimself admitted in his acceptancespeech.Dr. Lumbera reiterated in his acceptancespeech the role of thecritic and the aca<strong>de</strong>me in thecountry’s socio-political life an<strong>de</strong>ncouraged guests to be agentsof change.The guests that nightcould not have agreed more, cognizantof their own contributionas well in the formation of popularconsciousness. g<strong>de</strong>villesShayne Lumbera, Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, Fr. The ConfuciusInstitute at the <strong>Ateneo</strong> is the firstsuch institute established in thePhilippines. Apart frompromoting Chinese language andculture, it aims to increaseknowledge of contemporaryChina in mainstream Philippinesociety.The institute’s three areas offocus are: the training ofMandarin language teachers forhigher education institutionsthroughout the Philippines; theThe Chemistry <strong>de</strong>partment continues its tradition of excellence.This year, five young Chemistry instructors have beguntheir doctoral studies overseas: Edward Chainani (Universityof Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) and Rene Macahig (HiroshimaUniversity) are featured here. Other doctoral candidtates areLorna Arao (University of California, Davis), Ellazar Niangar(Princeton University), and Gilbert Yu (University of Toronto).teaching of Mandarin Chinese tothe general public; and theorganizing of seminars andsymposia to discuss issues oncontemporary China. Just as Renehas been inspired by the lives of hismentors, his has also been a sourceof encouragement to one and manyothers.
