CHITO-RYU KARATE-DO NEWSLETTER SPRING 2008this place, it’s a beautiful hotel where many of the currentand past presidents have visited. In the mid 50’s if yougrew up in West Virginia, as Hanshi and I did, you wouldhave heard of the bunkers that were built there. Thebunkers are under the West Virginia wing of the hotel.They were built for the Senators and the members of theHouse of Representatives to stay in case of a nuclearattack on Washington DC. We were able to take a tour ofthese bunkers that are now open to the public. A greatexperience, if you are traveling through on I-64 youshould stop and visit this historic place.The trip was very rewarding, Kevin Drummond, MikeMessinger, and David Ash, who have been hosting theWest Virginia Camp for more then twenty years, are thegreatest hosts and made us all feel very welcome. CindyDrummond, Jackie Cross and Bill Messinger areinstrumental in helping keep this tradition alive. TheGage’s and Charlottesville students also made us feel partof the family. Paul and Kathy Webster are the greatesttraveling companions. Hanshi and I can’t thank all of youenough for your friendship and devotion to the USCK.By: Barbara E. Dometrich, KyoshiYoseikan HombuSEPTEMBER 1, 2008CHARLOTTESVILLE YOSEIKANLabor Day or not, the budo-ka at Cville Yoseikan cameout in full force for the visit of Hanshi and KyoshiDometrich. Accompanied by Paul and Kathy Webster,the Founders of USCK honored us at the Cville Yoseikanwith their presence on the heels of the Audra State ParkSeminar in nearby West Virginia. A source from W. Va.Informed me that Hanshi, in spite of hobbling out of thecar the Friday night prior to the Sat seminar, was in “rareform”. Having bestowed upon the good folks in the hillsone of his “never say die” clinics, we here in Virginia cameprepared to sweat! Beginning with a dojo dedication (eventhough this is now the 7th year for us,we have a newlyrenovated facility) and formal “bowing in”, the trainingbegan. Kihon, peppered with all sorts of do's and don'tencompassed the first hour or better. As always, the stresson the importance of basics being one of Hanshi's biggestpriorities became very clear to the students here at Cville.It was amazing to watch Hanshi demonstrate mai geri(front kick) with such power and stability knowing all thewhile of his severe ailments. This true determination andperseverance is the inspiration that keeps all of us strivingto become better budo-ka.We proceeded to work self-defense techniques using bothclub and gun assaults. The karate-ka really enjoyed thisportion of the class and especially some of the storiesthat Hanshi imparted to them from his many years in thepolice department. Next we went on to work kata.Hanshi took a look at some of the students who areheading over to test in October for their Ik-kyu rank. Healso had two of our young brown belts demonstrate a kataof their choice. Megan Payne (Budo Baby) and DannyMonge (our AAU kumite champ) showed the classTaikyoku Ni (one of my favorite katas).The class finallybowed out after more then three hours of non stopaction. Everyone was so excited to have Hanshi andOkusan in their midst For some, it was the first occasionto meet them. In spite of his legendary stature, as well asOkusan's many accomplishments, the students felt theirhumility and were even more awed by these two icons inthe world of Martial Arts.We are all truly blessed to be a part of The United StatesChito Kai and will continue to strive to uphold the tenetsof Chito-ryu Karate-do.By: Linda GageCharlottesvi!e YoseikanUNITED STATES CHITO-RYU KARATE-DO FEDERATION PAGE 16
CHITO-RYU KARATE-DO NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2008My Camping TripWe arrived at Audra State Park, West Virginia on Friday,August 29 th . We used walky-talky’s to communicatebetween the cars. It took forever to get there. When wegot there, my family had to decide where we were goingto camp. We decided to take three open campsites andcall them our own. Most of the karate trainers werealready there. We parked the cars and started to unloadthem. We took the tents out and started to set them up.Then we met two problems. First, one of our tents didn’thave the poles or the pegs, which meant my grandmotherhad to go to Wal-Mart and buy another tent. Second, thetent that I slept in didn’t have the bottom, which meantbugs could crawl in whenever they wanted. So we resolvedthe problem by tying up the bottom. After everything wasset up, my family set out to go to the cookout. Me and mybrother and sisters were already there because we leftwhile the adults were still putting up the tents. Mybrother and sisters and I were eating ribs when theyarrived. The dinner consisted of BBQ ribs, coleslaw, andbeans. We greeted them and they started chatting withthe other karate trainers. After we all ate and talked, weleft and went back to our campsite. We roastedmarshmallows and told stories. After that we went tosleep.On the second day we put our clothes on and waited forthe seminar to start. I really didn’t want to go to theseminar because it takes forever to be over. Then out ofnowhere, it started to rain. At first it was a light sprinkle,then it rained heavily. We had to go into the tent whenwater started to seep into the tent because we left thedoors open to air out the tent, and that’s when thegranddaddy longlegs started to come into the tent. I’mreally scared of spiders. I went nowhere near that tentuntil my mom (whose also afraid of spiders) got them allout. We got into the car because it started to rain again.My brother, sisters, and cousin and I thought that wewouldn’t have to go the seminar because of the weatherconditions. But when we got the news that the seminarwas going to be held under a shelter, we had to stop beingbabies and start being serious karate trainers. We gotdressed and my grandfather and Sensei Petty picked us upand drove us to the place.We arrived to the shelter and saw Hanshi and about 16other people bowing in. We were late. My grandfatherwas upset because of this, but I guess he let it go. It was avery weird seminar because we trained with our shoes on.When we walked to the shelter, we joined them andstarted the warm-ups. After that, Hanshi lead everybodyin exercises and various kata. Then we took a break. Idrank a Gatorade without taking a breath. When westarted back up, the fun started. And by fun, I mean selfdefensetechniques. We learned how to evade anopponent attacking with a baseball bat or stick, and jamhis arms so he couldn’t attack again. We also learned howto take away a gun when it is pointed to us, and to takeaway a knife when it is being swung at us. Hanshi didsuch a great job at teaching that he changed my boredomin fun learning, and I think he changed the way peoplethink about the situation when they are attacked with abaseball bat, knife or gun. After that was over, we bowedout, packed up the things, and headed back to thecampsite. We put our clothes back on and wentswimming in the lake. I was skipping stones with myfriends and family. After we finished swimming, weroasted marshmallows and told more stories until westarted to pack up the food and things in order to leave inthe morning. Then we slept in the tent for the last time.The next morning, we took down all the tents (except forthe one I slept in because we gave it away) and packed upall the rest of the thing and left. My family and I learned alot from this camping trip, like how to protect ourselvesfrom opponents with weapons, how to take away weaponsfrom opponents that try to use them on you, and how tomake sure your family has everything they need beforethey leave to go camping and find out that they forgot it.By: Adrian BanksYoseikan HombuUNITED STATES CHITO-RYU KARATE-DO FEDERATION PAGE 17
