Greater involvement of social scientists andvarious stakeholders at the stage of planning R&D/ surveys/ technologychoice will enable policy makers to understand economic, social andcultural dimensions of proposed policy changes, to anticipate behaviouralresponses of the affected people, and to ensure smooth implementationof policies.The interface between science and economics is necessary fordeveloping the information base and methodologies for pollutionprevention and control and sustainable management of naturalresources. The policy oriented joint research will enhance India‘s capacityin articulating her concerns in international environmental negotiations, inconducting sustainability assessments of contemplated policy changes,and in formulating domestic policies , based on national circumstancesand policy priorities, by assessing the trade-offs in integrating andbalancing the three pillars of sustainable development.19
