Globalscope Moves to Scotland
Emmanuel is no stranger to Globalscope
(an international campus ministry program
with Christian Missionary Fellowship
International), and this year is no different.
First-year students Dee Humphrey and
Kate and Andrew Owens decided to enroll
at Emmanuel as they and their teammates,
Ansley Cleveland and Tim Crabtree, prepare
for full-time
ministry. The
team will plant
a new Globalscope
ministry
in Edinburgh,
Scotland, working
as campus
ministers who will
reach out to non-
Christian students
at the University
of Edinburgh.
They plan to be
on the field by the
beginning of the
fall semester of
2012.
Although Kate was born in England,
she grew up in Georgia, along with Dee
and Andrew. It was during their time as
students at Georgia Tech, involved in the
Christian Campus Fellowship (CCF)
where Rick Harper (M.A.R. ‘87) is the
campus minister, that they became friends
and began to experience how life-changing
campus ministry can be. “My life was
changed by campus ministry and people
who loved me for who I was and taught me
so much about what a life living for Jesus
looked like. I think introducing college
students to Jesus during such a formative
time in their lives is incredibly important,”
Kate explained.
While in college, each of the three experienced
Globalscope first-hand as exchange
students – Dee went to Chile in 2008, Kate
went to Chile in 2009, and Andrew went
to Spain in 2007. It was those experiences
with Globalscope and as interns at CCF at
Georgia Tech that showed Dee, Kate, and
Andrew that they wanted to do international
campus ministry through Globalscope.
Dee said that for many students college
is “when they make that decision one way
or the other if they believe there’s a God. So
I think it’s such a great time to talk to them
about what they believe,
because they’re
already thinking
about it.” Dee, Kate,
and Andrew hope
to build a community
built upon God’s
love that reaches out
specifically to non-
Christian students in
order to show them
the love of Christ and
the acceptance and
joy they are searching
for.
The five-person
Kate and Andrew Owens and Dee Humphrey team decided to move
to East Tennessee
as a unit so they could grow together and
strengthen their team. They wanted to
spend a year learning as much as they could
from the Emmanuel community. Kate said
they decided to attend Emmanuel “because
of Emmanuel’s reputation for incredible
academics and close, encouraging community.”
Coming from a secular undergraduate
experience, Dee, Kate, and Andrew are
enjoying the chance to take classes on the
Bible, theology, and Christian history. Andrew
enjoys the way Emmanuel professors
present scripture as it is. Andrew believes
“scripture is powerful, and my education
here will only help me to better present
a more accurate view of scripture to our
students.”
Dee, Kate, and Andrew are all pursuing
M.Div. degrees which they would like to
complete at some point in the future if that
is what God has in store for them.
