In 1999, EDF opened an offi ce in Beijing. EDF hassince helped launch a series of environmental protectionprograms in China that explore new approaches tosupport both environmental protection and economicdevelopment. In 2010, EDF expanded its operations toShanghai.EDF’s China Program has always relied on a combinationof economic and market-based strategies toaddress environmental problems-an approach thattakes into account the problems encountered inChina’s current stage of economic development andenvironmental protection. The SO 2 Total EmissionsControl and Emissions Trading project, began in 1999,has gradually expanded to six broad initiatives today:1. Creating a Multi-Pollutant Control Strategy for Coal-Fired Power Plants2. Strengthening Enforcement of Environmental Protection3. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Agriculture4. Greening China’s Supply Chain5. Encouraging Public Participation in Mitigating ClimateChange6. Training (China’s Environment Innovators)EDF has made signifi cant contributions toward strengtheningChina's environmental protection via in-depthcooperation with the Chinese government, researchinstitutes, and nongovernmental organizations. Dr. DanielDudek, Vice President of EDF, received the NationalFriendship Award-the highest honor given to foreignexperts by the Chinese government-in 2004. Dr. Dudekhas met with Premier Wen Jiabao and other nationalleaders on numerous occasions, and was appointedto the China Council for International Cooperation onEnvironment and Development in 2007. In 2010, the OrganizingCommittee of World Exposition 2010 Shanghaiawarded EDF an honorary certifi cate.
