Promoting Better Health for Young PeopleUSOC and the professional sports leagues. A foundation to supportpromotion of physical activity could complement the work of the coalitionand play a critical role in obtaining the resources needed to help our youngpeople become physically active and fit.Physical activity is crucial to our health, happiness, and well-being. Thestaggering consequences of decreases in physical activity are clear: soaringrates of obesity and diabetes, potential future increases in heart disease, anddevastating increases in health care costs. We now have the opportunity toreshape our sedentary society into one that facilitates and promotesparticipation in physical activity during childhood, throughoutadolescence, and into adulthood. The 10 strategies and the process forfacilitating their implementation described in this report provide thefoundation for our children to rediscover the joys of physical activity and toincorporate physical activity as a fundamental building block of theirpresent and future lives.32
