<strong>Carlos</strong> <strong>Sanchez</strong>-<strong>Gutierrez</strong>, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, artistic directorsJuan Trigos, principal conductorFormed at the Eastman School of Music by composers Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon and <strong>Carlos</strong> <strong>Sanchez</strong>-<strong>Gutierrez</strong>, the Eastman BroadBand is a flexible group whose aim is to explore the many facets ofcontemporary music-making. Its repertoire includes modern classics, such as Ligeti, Lutoslawski, Birtwistle,and Carter, as well as recent music by many living composers, including that of <strong>Sanchez</strong>-<strong>Gutierrez</strong>, Zohn-Muldoon, and the group’s Conductor, Juan Trigos. The BroadBand’s performances offer equal doses of therigor, precision, artistry, uncompromising furor and joy that characterize the wide range of New Musicactivities at the Eastman School.The Eastman BroadBand has performed internationally at the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico,Festival SpazioMusica in Cagliari, Italy, and as Resident Ensemble at the 2008 and 2010 FestivalInternacional Chihuahua in Mexico. Recently, the group has also performed in New York City at SymphonySpace’s Sonidos festival, at the Americas Society, and at Miller Theatre of Columbia University, and gavethe premiere of Garth Fagan’s Edge/Joy, with the Garth Fagan Dance Company at the Joyce Theatre. Theensemble has recorded for Bridge Records. Its principal conductor is Juan Trigos. <strong>Carlos</strong> <strong>Sanchez</strong>-<strong>Gutierrez</strong>, Artistic Co-Director<strong>Carlos</strong> <strong>Sanchez</strong>-<strong>Gutierrez</strong> was born in Mexico City in 1964 and now lives in the New York Tundra,where he teaches composition at the Eastman School of Music. He studied with Jacob Druckman,Martin Bresnick, Steven Mackey and Henri Dutilleux at Yale, Princeton and Tanglewood, respectively.He has received many of the standard awards in the field (e.g. Barlow, Guggenheim, Fulbright,Koussevitzky, Fromm, American Academy of Arts and Letters.) He likes machines with hiccups andspiders with missing legs, looks at Paul Klee's Notebooks everyday, hasn't grown much since hereached adulthood at age 14, and tries to use the same set of ears to listen to Bach, Radiohead, orLigeti.Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Artistic Co-DirectorRicardo Zohn-Muldoon was born in Guadalajara, México in 1962. After initial guitar studies in México, hepursued his musical education in the U.S., at the University of California, San Diego (B.A.), and at theUniversity of Pennsylvania (M.A.; Ph.D.), where his principal teacher was George Crumb.Zohn-Muldoon’s compositions grow from concise and precisely sculpted musical ideas, which are set tounfold in contrapuntal “kaleidoscopes” of intense rhythm and color. Mexican literature has provided the pointof departure for many of his compositions, such as the scenic cantata Comala, based on Juan Rulfo’s PedroPáramo, and the miniature opera NiñoPolilla on a libretto by Juan Trigos senior. His recent work includes theinterdisciplinary collaborations Encounters, with celebrated cartoonist José Ignacio Solórzano ("Jis"), for aconcert series leading to the FIFA World Cup of 2006; Silueta como Sirena, a setting of songs by songwriterAlfredo Sánchez, written for Sánchez, the Tarab cello ensemble, and the Riverside Symphony; andEdge/Joy, with award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan.Zohn-Muldoon's works have been performed worldwide at venues such as Lincoln Center, TheMetropolitan Museum of Art, Akademie der Schönen Künste (Munich), Ijsbreker Hall (Amsterdam),Festival Cervantino (México), and Festival SpazioMusica (Cagliari). He has been recognized by theGuggenheim Foundation, the Endowment for Culture and the Arts of México (FONCA), the FrommFoundation, Meet the Composer, the Camargo Foundation, the Tanglewood Music Festival (Omar delCarlo Fellowship), and Initiative Neue Musik Berlin, among many others. He is associate professor ofcomposition at the Eastman School of Music. His music hasbeen performed extensively throughout Europe and the Americas.As a conductor, he has premiered and promoted an extensive catalogue of new works, both in liveperformance and recording. He has worked with numerous choirs, ensembles and orchestras in Europe,North America and Mexico. He was Conductor and Music Director of the Orquesta de Camara de BellasArtes in Mexico City.
