CENTREFIRE RIFLE CARTRIDGESAMMUNITION - 13Ballistic dataData determinationThe ballistic data found on RWS and GECO cartridge boxesare not absolute but median values derived from manymeasurements taken with firearms of various make. Thosedata can be heavily influenced by, for example, differingThe trajectoryThe barrel length is also given along with the cartridge data.This is usually 600 mm for RWS rifle cartridges. Should yourbarrel be slightly longer or shorter than this, then the velocitywill increase or decrease. With high-performance cartridges,this value may vary by as much as 20 m/sec. It is taken asbarrel lengths. Firing tests of all cartridges are made andevaluated under identical conditions in our own facilities.As a rule, these ballistic data are valid for level fire at sealevel.given that the scope sight is mounted with its optical axis 5cm above the bore axis. Positive values mean a bullet impactabove the line of sight, negatives values show impact belowthe line of sight.RWSAmmunitionThe Recommended Zero Range - RZRThe RZR is that point where the bullet’s path crosses the lineof sight for the second time so that the bullet drops no morethan 4 cm below the line of sight to give the maximum pointblankrange. In the example below, an RZR of 182 m gives amaximum point-blank range of 209 m so that point of aim isthe same up to 209 m. The rifle can still be zeroed at 100 m.In a 7 x 64. for example, setting the point of impact to 4 cmhigh at 100 m means that no change in point of aim is necessaryup to the maximum point-blank range of 209 m.The RWS sighting-in target is optimal forthis use and can be downloaded fromour website rws-ammunition.com. The rate ofbraking depends upon the shape, mass and velocity of thebullet as well as the air density. The ballistic coefficient (BC)describes the bullet’s influence on this resistance and isthereby a measure of how readily the bullet is braked by windresistance or, in other words, the ability of the projectile toovercome air resistanceThe velocity V is given in metres per second (m/sec) for thedistances of 0, 50, 100, 200, 250 and 300 metres. The valueV o is that of the bullet velocity as it leaves the muzzle of therifle. The kinetic energy of a bullet is based upon its velocityand its weight. Energy values are given in Joules (J) for rangesbetween 0 and 300 m. The value E 100 shows the amount ofenergy delivered to a game animal 100 metres distant fromthe muzzle. In Germany, for example, roe deer must be takenwith a cartridge that has an E 100 of at least 1000 Joules.
