Crossl<strong>in</strong>guistic perspectives on language vitalityIn this section, we present a cumulative language vitality <strong>in</strong>dex (LVI) forall 20 language groups on the basis of the four language dimensions describedearlier, i.e., the obta<strong>in</strong>ed proportional scores for language proficiency(understand<strong>in</strong>g), language choice (with mother), language dom<strong>in</strong>ance,and language preference. The LVI was based on the mean valueof the obta<strong>in</strong>ed scores for each of the four language dimensions (see Extraand Yagmur 2004 for further details).
