I. ConceptBackgroundThe United Nations designated the year 2002 as "the International Year of Ecotourism"to encourage more people to see tourism from the viewpoint of sustainabledevelopment. Ecotourism aims to help people experience and understand localnatural environments and traditional culture, contributing to better conservation of theseassets as well as community development.The World Tourism Organization (WTO) defines sustainable tourism as tourism thatconserves not only natural resources but also historical heritage and tangible/intangibleresources including tradition and culture, as well as tourism in which visitors cherishprecious sightseeing resources and contribute to their passage to the next generation.In many developing countries, tourism is an important industry that brings foreigncurrency, and is valued in terms of regional development advantages such as thecreation of job opportunities in the relevant areas and regional economic revitalization.Equal emphasis on the development and conservation of tourism resources is a vitalissue. At the same time, environmental conservation is a highly important and urgentissue in economic and social development.MotivationThis program aims to realize the introduction and promotion of eco-tourism, which goesa log way toward environmental conservation, wise use of natural resources andcontribution to community, based on the above-mentioned international environmentallaws.MethodologyParticipants shall have opportunity in Japan to:1) visit national parks, Ramsar sites and historical places,2) practice some field activities such as hiking, canoeing and horseback riding, and3) have discussions with the program leader or lectures to achieve program objective.II.
