Thefounding members were all journalists for the San Francisco Chronicle, but membership quickly included artists such asfellow Tonalist painters William Keith, Xavier Martinez, Gottardo Piazzoni, and Giuseppe Cadenasso.The Bohemian Grove, located in Sonoma County, was established six years after the club’s founding to hold its annualmeetings. Artistic performances have been central to the Grove and given it the character of a summer retreat. Thepresent work depicts the Campfire Circle, which is one of six performance venues on site.Both the club and grove continue to operate today, and membership includes such prominent political and businessleaders as Jimmy Carter, George W.
