And said he does notwant to be in a relationship. He thinks Valentine’sDay is one day out of the year thatsomeone is nice to their partner.“I’m not pressed about being in a relationshipright now,” he said. “It’s not on my prioritylist right now.”Since Valentine’s Day is just another day tohim, Ben said he will just watch televisionand chill. However, other students see it as aday to have fun regardless.“I’m going out with my sister to the MeltingPot!” said sophomore biology major JasmineForee. “We don’t need a man. We’re independent!”Valentine’s Day goes back to 270 A.D. witha clash between a kindly priest and a mightyruler. It has vestiges with the Christian andancient Roman traditions. Christians wereimprisoned for refusing to worship the RomanGods on this day. After Saint Valentine diedin jail on February 14, the letter he wrote hisdaughter was found and marked the day itwould be celebrated.The Lupercalia was a festival celebrated bythe Romans allowing a girls name to be put ina box and a boy would draw her name, so theycould be lovers for the year. Now we celebratethis day differently but we still honor love.Even though Ben does not want to celebratethis holiday, other students will enjoy this day,single or not:“I’m going to the club to have fun,” saidJames Dunn, a senior criminal justice major.If Ben did celebrate this day with that specialsomeone he would go out of his way as well.It would include a gift and dinner. Ben isconcentrating on obtaining his degree inEngineering. Before he is finished withgraduate school, he plans to be datingby then. In his past relationships he onlysought someone who was there when heneeded them.Right now his hands are so tied up withtraining for football and school that hedoes not have the time to be there foranybody.In the future love will find Ben and he willdo his best to be ready.
