The Chimney TopsTrailhead is along Newfound Gap Roadabout 8 miles south of the Park’sGatlinburg, TN entrance. The work isexpected to take two seasons to complete.The combination of heavy use,abundant rainfall, and steep terrainhas turned the Chimney Tops trail intoa badly eroded obstacle course of slick,broken rock, exposed tree roots andmud. The hazards that now exist onthe trail encourage hikers to pick theirway across the uneven surface or to divertthem off the edges of the trail,causing extensive soil erosion and resourcedamage.The Park’s Trails Forever Crew and willbe rebuilding the trail using rock andtimber. The planned work includes:Constructing rock steps to carry hikersup the steepest areas and prevent erosion;building elevated “turnpikes”-logs laid parallel and packed with dirt,to carry the trail across wetland areas,and creating numerous “waterbars” –logs or stone partially buried diagonallyacross the trail to divert rainwateroff the trail before it can erode thewalking surface. Park managers saythat the extensive use of durable stoneand rot-resistant black locust timbersin the reconstruction will stabilize thetrail for decades to come, reducing annualmaintenance, and greatly improvingthe visitor experience.According to Tobias Miller, theForeman of the Park’s Trails ForeverCrew,” Because of the narrow trail corridor,and steep drop-offs along theedges of the trail, we could not get thework done safely or eficiently withhikers streaming through. Much of theneeded work involves moving andbreaking large rock which will requireextensive rigging of cable systems thatGreat Smoky Mountains NP PhotoGreat Smoky Mountains Trail Workers Luke Conrad (at le) and Brian Holda use agriphoist to lower a large slab of rock to become part of the trail surface.will make the trail virtually impassable.Trying to accommodate hikersthrough the work zones with this typeof work underway would be hazardous.”The Park is scheduling the work soas to allow the Chimney Tops Trail tobe re-opened for peak visitor use eachFriday through Sunday. During the closuredays the Park is suggesting alternativetrails including: Alum Cave Trailwhich is two miles south of ChimneyTops along Newfound Gap Road, theAppalachian Trail north to CharliesBunion, the Rainbow Falls Trail fromthe Cherokee Orchard Road to the falls,or the Forney Ridge Trail from theClingmans Dome Parking Area twomiles to Andrews Bald. Park managersare especially encouraging people tohike the Forney Ridge Trail, becauseuntil recently it had the same sort ofproblems as the Chimney Tops Trailand is an example of the kind of workthat is ongoing at Chimney Tops.The Park’s Trails Forever Crew isfunded through a partnership betweenthe Park and the Friends of the Smokies.The Friends are donating$121,000 this year to support the program.The Park’s professional Trails Forevercrew will also be reinforced byvolunteers who sign up to work withthe crew on scheduled workdays, as individualsor part of organized groups.The Park invites interested trail workvolunteers to visit the Trails Foreverwebsite atwww.smokiestrailsforever.org or contactTrails & Facilities Volunteer Coordinatorat (828) 497-1949 for moreinformation.- NPS
