A range of novels, mostlyavailable in English, will be introduced.During this two-day course, participantswill engage with the various forms of artisticexpression that have developed in Muslimsocieties. After providing a historical overview,the course will highlight issues facingcontemporary Muslim societies as they grapplewith the aesthetic impacts of modernityand seek to formulate appropriate artisticexpressions for today.Sessions will reflect upon the relationshipbetween art and religion, including issues ofartistic patronage, and philosophical and legalperspectives on artistic production. Selectedartistic genres such as painting, architectureand calligraphy will be explored. In addition,the course will include a visit to a museum anda practical workshop.10 11
