Local fi lmmaker rakes in awards
WEST BROOKFIELD - West
Brookfi eld resident and aspiring fi lmaker,
Tina McKeown, took home seven
awards including “Best Film” in the
recent 48 Hour Film Project regional
competition in New Haven, Conn.
The awards were presented at the
movie screening at the Whitney Humanities
Center in New Haven on Saturday,
Sept 8. Tina’s fi lm “Kitty Carlson
& The Hunt for the West Brookfi eld
Creeper” will now compete in the national
fi lm competition Filmapalooza in
Los Angeles in 2013. Ten fi lms selected
from Filmapalooza will then be shown
at a special screening at the Cannes
Film Festival in France later in 2013.
The 48 Hour Film Project is an international
organization that runs fi lm competitions
in cities throughout the world
each year. The concept is that teams of
fi lm makers are given 48 hours to write,
shoot and edit a short fi lm (4-7 minutes
in length) for the competition. At 7
p.m. on Friday, July 27, all the competing
teams had to meet in New Haven
where they were assigned their fi lm
genre and character info. No planning
or script writing could begin until this
point. Tina’s team, Password 123 Productions,
was assigned “silent fi lm” as
a genre, “Kitty Carlson the translator”
as a character, “what am I supposed to
do with this?” as a line of dialog, and a
pitcher as a prop that must be used in
the fi lm. The completed fi lms had to be
submitted by 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 29
in New Haven. Twenty teams submitted
fi lms for the competition. Teams could
be amateur or professional fi lmmakers.
“Kitty Carlson and the Hunt for the
West Brookfi eld Creeper” was fi lmed
at locations in both West Brookfi eld
and North Brookfi eld the weekend of
July 28 and 29. The torrential rains
that weekend created a challenge for
the fi lmmakers, including having to re-
