PAGE 6 A Turley Publication • www.turley.com I Thursday, September 13, 2012 Fall Fest slated for Sept. 25 West Brookfi eld Senior Center offers array of activities By Jennifer Robert Turley Publications Reporter WEST BROOKFIELD - The West Brookfi eld Senior Center will be holding its annual Fall Fest Open House on Sept. 25. For the past several years, the Fall Fest has featured a day packed with fun activities that is open to the public. While the Apple Contest and craft vendors remain a constant, there have been some slight changes to the schedule of events this year. Director Cynthia Norden says that the traditional Apple Pie Contest has been expanded, to include all apple desserts. For the past three years, the same piemaker has walked away as winner, and Norden said she thought it would be interesting to open it up to an array of different desserts that have apples as the main ingredient. “The woman who wins every year, she hands down makes the best pie, of any type. It is just fabulous!” said Norden. Another addition this year is the presence of Brain Rutherford at the event, hosting a series of popular game shows complete with working buzzers and microphones. Norden anticipates that the Game Show Mania will be a bit hit with all in attendance. Tables are once again available for local crafters to set up a display and sell their wares. The donation for having a table space is one of your handmade items donated to the Senior Center. You can reserve a spot by calling the Senior Center. A box lunch social will be available, and the annual ham dinner will be held at 5 p.m., complete with entertainment by vocalist David Colucci. Tickets for the event are $10 and will be sold in advance only. In addition to the Fall Fest, the Senior Center has other great programming lined up for the fall. All without specifi cation SEE ANSWERS ON PAGE 15 Hampshire’s Kancamagus Scenic Highway, a trip that was originally slated for last year. Due to storm conditions, parts of the highway were caved in and the trip was unable to be held. The agenda for this trip includes traveling in style on a luxury Silver Fox motor coach, a full course buffet luncheon at the Indian Head Resort and several scenic sightseeing stops, including viewing of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. The trip cost is $59 per person, with payment due by Sept. 7. Norden said that currently the bus is about half booked. The Annual Veteran’s dinner will be held on Nov. 1. Norden said that she really enjoys hosting this dinner, and that the Center has a list of over 100 local Veteran’s. “Normally, we have a car show to raise money to be able to put this dinner on,” she said, “but we were fortunate enough to have the money to do it this year without having to have that fundraiser.” Ongoing programming is an important part of the services provided at the Senior Center. Lunches are provided daily by Tri-Valley, Tai Chi a “busy bee” group and games are offered throughout each week. Not only does the Center provide a service to the seniors in the area, it results in community service coming from the center as well. “We have a quilting group that meets every other week,” said Norden, “and they are just a great group. They have done a lot of donations to NICU units, making small blankets for those little babies, and also donated a lot of quilts to the Monson area during the tornado.” The “busy bee” group also is involved with making donations. “They are a group that started as an unfi nished project group. Ambulance providers and they also make baby hats to donate to Mary Lane Hospital and turban hats for people who are undergoing cancer treatments. They do so much good,” Norden said proudly. There is also a substantial lending library in the Center. While Norden has been at the West Brookfi eld Senior Center for over 20 years and director for almost eight, she is quick to point out that she certainly does not do it alone. There are between 70-90 regular volunteers. “We wouldn’t be able to do nearly as much as we do without them,” said Norden. Despite the large number of regular volunteers overall at the Center, Kelly Reavey-Gagnon, Tri-Valley Nutrition Site Manager for Meals on Wheels, said she is desperately in need of volunteers for the meal program. Drivers for the Meals on Wheels route are in high demand, and a volunteer can expect to contribute one hour of their time once a week. A personal vehicle is required for this. Reavey- Gagnon is also looking for kitchen help, which would be a three hour a week commitment at the West Brookfi eld site, and involves breaking all the food down into meals, breaking it into routes for MOW, serving in the dining room and clean up after the meal. In addition to being responsible for the coordinator of the lunch program and MOW, Reavey-Gagnon said that she also does a lot of checking up on folks who get their meals delivered at home. When a volunteer goes to deliver a lunch, and the participant is not home, she then needs to touch base with the emergency contact to follow up on the participant’s welfare. A request to have Corriea and White speak, as they are not town residents, was voted down. The town had originally voted on the bridge project at the June ATM and it failed, 84-55. But that wasn’t the case this time: The vote overwhelmingly passed at Friday’s STM 205-16. Other articles In other STM news, voters passed Article 2, which asked for $25,767.39 town to pay the Department of Unemployment Assistance for late bills from fi scal years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Voters also passed Article 3, which asked voters to approve a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) for the proposed solar facility at the capped landfi ll, one of the fi nal steps in completing negotiations between the town and EPG Solar LLC. Article 4, a citizen’s petition asking voters to approve an altered Quaboag bridge option, was passed over due to the passage of Article 1. The meeting lasted only about 45 minutes. Another Special Town Meeting is expected to be held in November, for lingering articles that depend on fi nal Cherry Sheet numbers from the state. - obituaries - Lisardo “Peter” Rio, 91 EAST BROOKFIELD - Lisardo “Peter” Rio-91, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 in his residence. He is predeceased by his wife of 65 years Beatrice J. (Langlois) Rio in Sep. 2010. He leaves his son Dale Rio and his wife Debbie; a daughter Linda Falardeau and her husband Richard all of East Brookfi eld; 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Peter was born in Boston, MA and has lived in East Brookfi eld since 1938. He owned and operated his dairy farm for many years and worked for the Charlton Woolen Mill. He later worked at Coppus Engineering in both Worcester and Millbury for over 30 years as a crater and boiler engineer until he retired. Relatives and friends attended a calling hour on Sept. 10 in Pillsbury Funeral Home, Rte 9/Old West Brookfi eld Road, Brookfi eld. The funeral service followed in the funeral home. Snow died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 in Quaboag Rehab & Skilled Care Center in West Brookfi eld. She was 87 years old. She is predeceased by her husband Russell E. Snow, who died in 1992. She leaves a son, Russell B. Snow and his wife Debra of Spencer; her three daughters, Cynthia E. Lamoureux and her husband Lionel of West Brookfi eld, Susan L. Babineau and her husband Risto of Spencer, and Shirley A. Blanchard and her husband William of West Brookfi eld; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Viola was born in Worcester, the daughter of Harry E. Fogerty and Evelyn L. (Turner) Fogerty. She resided in Spencer for 60 years before moving to West Brookfi eld in 2010. Viola was a longtime member of the Spencer Congregational Church, was an avid reader, and enjoyed going on many senior citizen trips with her friends. She loved to travel and most of all spend time with her family. Relatives and friends attended a calling hour on Sept. 13 at the Spencer Congregational Church, Spencer, MA. A funeral service for Viola followed. In lieu of fl owers, contributions in memory of Viola can be made to the Spencer Congregational Church. The family would like to extend its thanks to the staff at Quaboag for the outstanding care provided to Viola. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
