He is the fifth of eight children ina Catholic Chinese family. His parents wererelatives of a Manchurian Emperor, the rulersof the last Chinese dynasty. Wang was ordainedin Hong Kong in 1959, but was unable to serveChina due to the Communist regime’s lack oftolerance. There are 2.5 million Catholics in 90dioceses n China; however, the church is forcedto operate largely in the shadows.Bishop Wang is the first bishop of Asian ancestryin the United States. He was appointed byPope John Paul II and ordained at St. Mary’sCathedral in 2003.
