De Smet JesuitDe Smet JesuitA new year brings some changes to the school, specifically the InstitutionalAdvancement Department and some of our programs.Our two newest staff members have De Smet Jesuit connections. PatMorris ’06, joined the staff in December, 2012, and starts his first fullyear as Coordinator of Annual Giving Programs/Alumni Relations.Pat’s dad is John Morris ’83, and his brothers are Dan ’13, and John’15.In July, Michaela “Kala” O’Connor, daughter of John O’Connor ’72,joined the staff as Communications Coordinator. She will overseethe management of the school’s website, and social media programs,as well as, the design of this publication, the twice-yearly Odysseynewsmagazines, and the three printed sports programs, as well asmany other projects.John A. StilesVice President of Institutional AdvancementDear Alumni, Current Parents, Alumni Parents, and Friends of DeSmet Jesuit,“Because of you.” Those are three simple words that mean a greatdeal, especially when talking about our recently completed fiscal year.• Because of you, our Annual Giving Fund had its best year ever, atnearly $760,000.• Because of you, our Tradition Golf Tournament had its best yearever, netting almost $41,000.• Because of you and your financial gifts, 226 young men were ableto attend De Smet Jesuit; young men who probably would not havebeen here had it not been for you.• Because of you, several new scholarships have been established,which will provide financial assistance to those in need.• Because of you, we were able to make some wonderful upgradesto the cafeteria.• And, because of you, De Smet Jesuit has the first lacrosse practicewall in the state.If you haven’t been by De Smet Jesuit recently, I not only invite you,but encourage you to come by for a visit, and see these excitingimprovements to the De Smet Jesuit campus.If you are an alum, I not only invite you, but encourage you to signup to lead a Friday morning prayer, or share your De Smet Jesuitexperience, and how it helped you in your career with our juniors andseniors by participating in our Alumni mentor program.There will be some exciting changes to our annual Odyssey Auction,our largest fundraising event. This school year it will be held on March29, 2014, instead of November. It will also be held off-site, at the HiltonPlaza Frontenac. Without giving too much away, this is an event youwon’t want to miss!While I am very happy about having our best year for the AnnualFund, I am more proud of the fact that 33 of the 42 alum classes(79%) increased their total class gifts to the Annual Fund over the previousyear—and four classes (1975, 1977, 1979 and 1981) increasedtheir class giving by $5,000 or more.One other change you may notice is that you won’t be receiving thestandard Annual Giving brochure this year. This will allow us to bebetter stewards of the gifts we are given. Instead, if you gave lastyear, we will be contacting you directly to discuss your willingness tomake a gift. If you didn’t make a gift last year, and would like to thisyear, please use the Annual Giving envelope included in the Odysseynewsmagazine.This year I hope we can again count on you to support De Smet Jesuit.More importantly, I hope that we have earned your support andconsideration.Because of you, De Smet Jesuit is a better place.For that, I say, Thank You!Sincerely,John A.
