How are conservationareas chosen?There is no standard specification and areas are ofmany different kinds ranging from small villages tothe town centres of Thirsk and Northallerton. Theone thing which all conservation areas share is thattheir architectural or historic interest and theirspecial character or appearance is worthconserving and enhancing.While listed buildings are chosen by theDepartment of the Environment, conservation areasare designated by local authorities, usually the<strong>District</strong> <strong>Council</strong>.There are 47 conservation areas in <strong>Hambleton</strong><strong>District</strong>, which are listed and shown on the mapoverleaf. The <strong>District</strong>-Wide Local Plan shows theseareas in greater detail and leaflets describing theprincipal features and the special character of eacharea are being prepared.Thirsk clockIntroductionThis leaflet explains to residents and propertyowners what living or owning property in aconservation area means and how it mayaffect them.What is a conservationarea?A conservation area is an area of specialarchitectural or historic interest, the character orappearance of which it is desirable to preserveor enhance.<strong>Conservation</strong> areas were introduced in 1967 tosafeguard historic areas rather than individualhistoric buildings.
