Conference OverviewAchieving Effective Outcomes:L anguage, L earning and L iteracy‘L’ plates for language? We don’t receive a drivers licence for communication, yet there isno doubt that we develop new skills as we develop language and literacy skills, and thateducators and families play a major role in society as ‘communication’ driving instructors. We all want children and adolescents to be confident and effective communicators, yethow do we help them to achieve this? The road our children are driving on makes adifference. Some children come from language-rich environments that make the highwayahead of them easy to travel over. Some come from non-English speaking backgrounds, which may make the negotiation of the road a little trickier. Some may have learningdifficulties, which may mean that we have to adapt our driving teaching strategies. Theaim of this conference is to focus on achieving effective outcomes to help all childrenand adolescents transition to “fully licensed” communicators. This year we are delighted and very fortunate to have Professor Nickola Wolf Nelsonfrom Western Michigan University – a much-revered figure in the area of languageand communication, who has made hugely important contributions to our body ofknowledge. For her keynote address on day 1 of the conference, she will present onmodels of spoken and written language disorders, assessment and differential diagnosis. On day 2, Professor Nelson’s presentation will focus on curriculum and classroom basedintervention for children with language/literacy disorders.National language and learning experts will also be joining us including AssociateProfessor Cori Williams, Associate Professor Genevieve McArthur, and Dr Roslyn Neilson, amongst others. Some of the presentations will include the identification of languagedisorders in children from non-English speaking backgrounds and evidence for basedclassroom approaches; research on the language based processing problems that underliepersistent reading difficulties; collaborative models of service for teachers and speechpathologists; and evidence based practice for language and learning impairments. The full conference program can be viewed on our website at http://www.cheri.com.au/conferences.html
