Winthrop Honors Long-Time, BelovedPhysician with the Dedication of theDr. Martin Spatz Conference CenterIn recognition of a physician’s extraordinarybenevolence and to honor himfor his 47 years of service as part of theinstitution’s world-class medical staff,Winthrop-University Hospital hasrededicated and renamed its New LifeConference Center to the Dr. MartinSpatz Conference Center.The passion of Dr.Spatz’s professional life wasWinthrop (then known asNassau Hospital when Dr.Spatz first joined the MedicalStaff in 1947). In many ways,the late Dr. Spatz was a pioneerin the practice ofmedicine/surgery, especiallyurology, serving as Chief ofthe Division of Urology andActing Chairman of theDepartment of Urology for23 years. At his retirementdinner on August 31, 1994,Dr. Spatz remarked, “…Ihave seen the Hospital growfrom a 250-bed purely communityservice Hospital…toa 600-bed University CampusHospital – an academic institution –but still devoted to excellent communityservice. The newpartnership, under the expert leadershipof Anthony Gambino, MD,Winthrop’s Director of OutpatientCardiology Services, and RichardSchwartz, DO, Winthrop’s Directorof Cardiovascular Outreach, utilizesWinthrop’s expertise in cardiovascularcare and provides enhanced cardiac careand services to patients at the KnappCardiac Care Center at BrookhavenMemorial Hospital.“Winthrop-University Hospital ispleased to collaborate with BrookhavenMemorial Hospital to bring our comprehensivecardiac care services to those whowork and live in this community,” saidJohn F.
