ROYAL OCEANRACING CLUBINTRODUCTIONThe Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) is a private members’ club which organises offshoreracing predominantly in north European waters, for members and non-members alike and is alsoclosely involved in the development and management of yacht racing as a worldwide sport.Club membership is strictly limited to competent offshore yachtsmen and yachtswomen whoqualify by completing a minimum mileage of offshore racing. There are currently 3,600members of whom nearly a third are resident outside the UK.The privileges of membership, in addition to being a member of an elite and influentialorganisation in the yachting world, include the use of the RORC’s elegant clubhouse at St.James’s Place, London, which the Club has occupied for over 50 years. The clubhouse offers afriendly and congenial atmosphere, with a licensed bar and dining room, and there are 17bedrooms available for members at extremely reasonable rates. The Jolie Brise Room and theFastnet Room are available for hire for private parties or business functions. The clubhouse is wellused by members and their guests, always in the knowledge that they share an interest inoffshore racing with others present. Members’ subscriptions compare very favourably with otheryacht clubs and London clubs alike, and there are reduced rates for those resident overseas andmarried couples. The Club also maintains accommodation facilities in Cowes which are available to members atvery reasonable rates. The Club runs a large crew register database which is maintained throughout our season: itmatches yacht owners with crew members interested in taking part in RORC racing. During thespring and autumn, regular social functions including lectures are held at the Club, with anannual dinner and prizegiving in November/December each year. Prizegiving parties are heldafter races, either at the destination of the race, if appropriate, or at the clubhouse in London ata later date. Each year a cocktail party is held on the lawn of the Royal Yacht Squadron duringCowes Week.Members receive free every month the RORC’s own magazine, Seahorse, the leadinginternational yachting journal, which contains racing news, renowned technical features and acalendar of the Club’s forthcoming events. The RORC was founded in Plymouth in 1925 by a small group of dedicated offshore yachtsmen, following the first Fastnet Race which took place that year. Since 1925, the Fastnet and otherraces in the English Channel, North Sea, Irish waters, the Mediterranean and Far East have beenrun on a regular basis, interrupted only by the Second World War. The Fastnet is held biannuallyand is still the centrepiece of the Club’s activities.A handicap rule, which became the RORC Rule, was first developed by the RORC in 1925 forthe first Fastnet Race. This Rule continued in use until the late 1960's when it was combined withthe Cruising Club of America Rule to create the IOR Rule.Through the Rating Office in Lymington, the RORC is the UK national body for the measurementand rating of offshore racing yachts. The Office was the rule authority for the Volvo (neeWhitbread) 60 Rule and developed and now manages the Volvo Open 70 Rule for the VolvoOcean Race. The Office also provides services to regatta organisers by way of rating andmeasurement checking services and general consultancy.
