ISSUE 2FROM BAGRAM AIR FIELDADAPT AND OVERCOME...PAGE 6By, SSgt Chris AnkoviakThat’s what the Horsemen aredoing at Bagram AF, Afghanistan. The ATOC crew has becomeaccustomed to the fact that“making it work” is always anoption. Everyday they’re facedwith challenges that would makethe normal person panic fromsheer anxiety. The crew hastackled everything from pushstartingthe rental bus to avoidingArmy privates walking in themiddle of the icy roads; and that’sjust getting to the jobsite! Oncethey arrive at work they need toconfront the daily issues thatthreaten the completion of the7,600 square foot Combined AirMovement Facility (CAMF).The two story, $1.2 Million Pre-Engineered Building will not onlyhouse the Air Terminal OperationsCenter (ATOC) but the455 AEW Command Post andBattle Staff Conference Room. The Horsemen’s unrelentingdesire to overcome problemsfrom the previous rotation isevident every shift. Countlessobstacles have been negotiatedsince we started the project inmid November. Warped sheetrock, missing doors and trim, wrong HVAC diffusers, caved-inseptic tank, leaky gutters, fiveyear-oldfloor tile adhesive, missingdoor knobs, and a roll-updoor that is still in the States justto name a few. And those aren’tincluding the never-endingchanges that the customer wantsto make. Scope creep is unmistakableon this project. TheATOC and CP rooms bothneeded 12 foot ceilings to be ableto accommodate the numerous65” LCD screens. And the customerordered custom made“solid cherry” desks that weretoo large to move in after constructionwas complete. So theteam had to move the 12 footlong desks in before all the wallswere built and has since had towork around and move the heavytables on a daily basis.Despite copious hurdles duringthe project, the crew has pulledtogether to bring the buildingwithin weeks of completion. With a Structures crew that ishalf the normal size, the six carpentersalso have the task oftraining the other willing and ablecrafts to do a multitude of jobsfrom rough wall framing andsheathing to tedious finish worksuch as mudding sheetrock andhanging doors. The new carpenterscurrently include threePlumbers and three HVAC; andfive Dirt Boys also offered theirhands for a few weeks at thebeginning of the project. Wewere also able to enlist the helpof two Plumbers for two weeksthat were augmented by the SP’sas local worker escorts here atBagram. Our three Electriciansalso needed help, so they havetrained one Power Pro and oneHVAC in their field. There areno union cards at this jobsite!Currently, the walls are up, finished, textured and painted; thefloors are tiled and the ceilingsinstalled; the receptacles andlights are hot; the interior ductworkis ran; the bathrooms arecomplete and the doors arehung. Only door trim, exteriorductwork, cove base, and interiorwindows need to be installed, and the septic tank needs to beredone. The only thing holdingup the completion of the buildingis communication lines and materials. The teamwork on this job isabsolutely awe-inspiring! Speed, teamwork, precision craftsmanship, and redefining “making itwork”--this project is the epitomeof RED HORSE.
