What the National Care Standards sayNational Care Standards set out the standard of care that people can expect from anycare services they use. Two sets of National Care Standards describe the standardswhich children and young people who are looked after away from home can expect in:• care homes for children and young people• school care accommodation services.<strong>The</strong>se are available on our website (www.carecommission.com)According to the National Care Standards, children and young people who are lookedafter away from home can expect that their <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> and well being is promotedas follows:• National Care Standard 11 (care homes for children and young people)“Keeping Well - lifestyleYour <strong>health</strong> needs are met. Staff discuss your <strong>health</strong>care needs (physical,emotional and social) with you and your family, and others responsible for yourcare, and arrange for appropriate <strong>health</strong>care.”• National Care Standard 12 (school care accommodation services) –“Keeping Well - lifestyle<strong>The</strong> school or hostel promotes a <strong>health</strong>y lifestyle. You are confident that the staffwill know your <strong>health</strong>care needs and arrange to meet them in a way that is bestfor you.”In addition, <strong>The</strong> Regulation of Care (Requirements as to Care Services) (Scotland)Regulations 2002 4 (1)(a) states that “providers shall make proper provision for the<strong>health</strong> and welfare of service users”.How we carried out this studyThis section considers:• what information we looked at• how many services there are.5
