Naranjo is also a U.S. Sailing MasterTrainer, part of U.S. Sailing’s National Facultyand a past chairman of its Safety at Sea Committee.He is a past holder of the Vanderstar Chair at theU.S. Naval Academy and oversaw all sail training,seamanship and navigation programs for midshipmen.He began sailing in childhood on Long IslandSound and in 1975 he and his wife, Lenore, set sailon a five-year circumnavigation on their 41-footsloop Wind Shadow.Doug drumheller (Correspondence, “A passion fortime,” page 20) received bachelor and masters degrees inmechanical engineering from the University of SouthernCalifornia, and a PhD in applied mechanics fromLehigh University. He has written two college textbookson the mathematical theories of waves and holds 11U.S. patents in the area of acoustics. His research careerspans nearly 40 years at Bell Telephone Laboratories andSandia National Laboratories. He is retired but doessome consulting on the side. Recently widowed fromPhylis, his wife of 43 years, he lives in the mountains ofNew Mexico far away from the ocean, but he has beenknown to bareboat charter in some interesting placeswith his daughter, MeLinda, and her friends, Audreyand Ellen. He is planning to carry longitude across theAtlantic with his sea clock.Harry hungate (Voyaging Tips, ”Mixer elbows andheat exchangers,” page 42) and his wife, Jane Lothrop,aboard their Corbin 39 cutter, Cormorant, completedtheir 13-year west-about circumnavigation of the worldin December 2011 when they crossed their outboundtrack at Marigot Bay, St. Martin. They are now slowlyheading north and west through the Bahamas.
