-4-1921-1946 BERT SHAWFOREWORD TO 1921-1946 SECTIONAt my request, the executive of the Western District Cricket Club graciously consented to allow me tocompile a history, covering the club’s activities over the years since its inception. For that privilege andhonour I sincerely thank them.My purpose was a dual one. Firstly, I believe that there should be some permanent record kept by theclub of the deeds performed by its giants of the past. In the second place, I cherish the hope that thosedeeds which provide the club’s ancestry, will stimulate the present players into a desire to emulate thosewho performed them and help them to carry on the glorious traditions of the “grand old game”.Cricket is essentially a Britisher’s game, and, as such, should have a definite appeal to the youth of theBritish Commonwealth of Nations of which we are a part. In those dark years (1939-1945), when ourvery existence was at stake, our uniformed men still found time to enjoy their game. That they appliedthe lessons learned on the playing fields to the more serious game of war is now a proud part of ournational history.I salute them and give their illustrious names pride of place in this record.In conclusion, may I add that if you derive as much pleasure from the reading of this compilation as I hadin delving among the club’s annals to collate it, I am well rewarded. Ours is a great club with grandtraditions. -5-THE BIRTH OF “WESTS”At a special meeting of the Toowong Electorate Cricket Club and the Goodna Cricket Club held in thethY.M.C.A. on the 9 May 1921, it was decided on the motion of Messrs. T Shield and H Henley, “That anew club be formed and that it be named the Western Suburbs Electorate Cricket Club”. The motionwas carried.A subsequent motion which was moved by Mr H Henley and seconded by Mr R J Hartigan was to theeffect, “That this meeting submit to the QCA for its approval, a proposal that the boundaries of this newclub include Toowong, Ithaca, Paddington, that portion of Enoggera (south of Kelvin Grove Road), thesubdivision of Sherwood and Goodna”, was carried.“That the home ground be at Graceville” was the text of another motion moved by Mr R J Hartigan,seconded by Mr B V Davies, and carried after keen discussion.Thus, was born a new club - a club whose players were destined to “make the welkin ring” by theirsterling performances and whose annals are bedecked with the illustrious names of those who servedit faithfully on the playing fields or on the committee room.FIRST OFFICIALS - 1921Patron: Jas.
