NEWBERRY FOOTBALL IN THE SAC HALL OF FAMEFred Herren Coach/AD Class of 1999 (Inaugural Class)Fred Herren was raised in Smyrna, Ga., where he attended Campbell High School. While in high school, Herren was a footballAll-American honorable mention and also lettered in basketball, track and baseball. Herren attended the University ofTennessee at Chattanooga, playing halfback on the football team and competing in sprints and the broad jump for the trackteam. Herren earned his B.S. in 1958 and returned to his alma mater to receive his master’s in education. Herren was nameddirctor of athletics at Newberry College in 1968 and also began his tenure as head football coach. In 1971, Herren was namedSouth Carolina Coach of the Year after leading the Indians to an 8-2-1 record. In 1975, the first season of SAC-8 competition,Herren was selected as the SAC-8 Coach of the Year. Herren retired from coaching the Indians after ten seasons and wentto work in alumni affairs at the college. In 1981, Herren returned as Director of Athletics for a two-year stint before becomingthe Vice President for Development. In 1986, Herren returned to the athletics department for one more year.Charlie Coles Defensive Tackle Class of 2002Charles came to Newberry College in 1975 and was a defensive tackle. His junior year he was SAC 8 Player of the Week,Second Team All, Second Team All SAC 8, and All District. In his senior year he was First Team All SAC 8, SAC 8 Player ofthe Week Twice, SAC 8 Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All District, District Player of the Year, South Carolina SportsPlayer of the Week twice, South Carolina Sports Writers All State, and American Football Coaches All American team. Hewas Newberry College’s renegade chief for Best Defensive Player, Best Defensive Lineman award, and participated in theBlue Gray game. He was member of the preseason roster for 1979 Seattle Seahawks and the 1980 Detroit Lions. He latercoached at Mississippi College where his team won 5 straight playoff berths (1988-1992) and a National Championship in1989. He was inducted into the 2002 SAC Hall of Fame and as a tribute to Charlie, Coach Cally Gault of Presbyterian Collegecalled him one of the best defensive linemen to ever play in the SAC 8.Jimmy Skipper Quarterback Class of 2003He is a Columbia native who came to Newberry College in the fall of 1982. He worked his way into the starting lineup as afreshman. He became the Indians all leader in most of the passing records. He is the all time leader in total offensive (5,904),career passing (5,390), career attempts (744), career completions (372), touchdowns (34), most yards gained in a game(388), most rushing and passing yards in a game (435). He was the team’s Most Valuable Back his freshman year and teamMVP the other three seasons. He was First Team All-SAC twice, Second Team All-SAC once, and District Offensive Playerof the Year. He led his team to an upset victory over Furman. They finished the season with a 7-3-1 record and were rankedas high as #2 in the nation. He was named First Team All District for three seasons and Honorable Mention All-Americanhis senior season. Following his collegiate career he played professionally in London. He graduated from Newberry Collegein 1987.Eddie Taylor Kicker/Punter Class of 2007He is a native of Lugoff who came to Newberry College in the fall of 1985. He became a member of one the highest scoringfootball teams in his four years here a Newberry. He set numerous kicking and scoring records. He was best knownfor “THE KICK” to open the 1985 football season in which they beat Furman 24-21. Eddie’s school and conference recordof 57 yards won the game for the Indians. The school’s all time leader in field goals, he is tied for first in extra points, he iscurrently second on the all time scoring list (200), and he is the leading scoring in the school for kickers. He is also puntedfor the Indians and averaged 43 yards per punt on 200 punts. He holds the most records for field goals in a season with12, with 3 coming in one game. He was named Player of the Week in 1985, All District (four years), All SAC (2 years), wonthe team’s Special Teams Award (four years), and in 1985 was named Honorable Mention All American. He graduated andplayed professionally with the Atlanta Falcons.
