An interview with Matt ReaThe final installment from theunknown journalist for 2011comes in the form of an interviewwith Matt Rea, recently appointedSports Coordinator for Damascus<strong>College</strong> in Ballarat.(UJ) Unknown Journalist(MR) Matt ReaUJ. Well congratulations Matt onyour appointment at Damascus -you must be rapt?MR. Yeah really pleasedwith the opportunitythey’ve offeredme. Really like thestructures theyhave in place andhopefully will buildon them.UJ. How would yousum up your timehere at <strong>Marian</strong>?MR. What an opportunity<strong>Marian</strong> offered me. Reallyhad the chance to build onthe structures that were inplace here and hopefully left aplatform for the next Sports / PEHead.UJ. You weren’t just involved in<strong>Marian</strong>, you really got involved inthe local community, particularlywith coaching Moyston. Where tofrom here Matt?MR. Loved Moyston, they gaveme a real opportunity to coachthem. They allowed me to buildon their structures and hopefullyleave them in a good place. I’verecently been appointed as coachof Skipton. A great club with greatstructures, hopefully I can buildon those.<strong>Marian</strong>?MR. Being involved in all facets ofthe school. The big ones of coursewere the carnivals. They allowedme to tinker with what werealways solid structures to the daysprograms but also allowed me tohopefully add some fine tuning.Will miss those days for sure.UJ. And Damascus?MR. As I said, the structuresthere are sound andhopefully I can buildon those. Reallylooking forward to nottravelling and havingmore time at homewith Stace and thegirls.UJ. How will Stacecope with you homemore often?MR. I know that overthe past few yearswith me on the road shehas established some goodstructures. Hopefully I won’talter those too much just add abit of support and possibly tinkeraround the edges.UJ. An insightful interview Matt,good luck with the future.MR. You’ve all been good.Cheers.The path we take after school now is very different toour grandparents and even our parents when theyfinished school.It is no longer common for people to go in a straightdirection- i.e., from school to university to work or fromschool to TAFE to work. Young people go in alldifferent directions and it is common to do things nowlike25 November 2011UJ. Highlights of your time atThe Unknown Journalist14 15ooooFOCUS ON PATHWAYS AFTER SCHOOL:MANAGING YOUR CAREERStudy TAFE and university courses at the sametimeStart a course, take a year off in the middle andwork/ travel > return to study but in a differentcourseLeave school, start an apprenticeship, drop out,start a TAFE course, drop out, change occupations,work full time, go to university.Complete an apprenticeship and then go toUniversityYoung people have the flexibility to manage their owncareers and need to be ready to continually adapt tochange.For example- did you know that between 20 – 30% ofyoung people either drop out of or change theiruniversity course during first year?Did you know that about 50% of people don’t completetheir apprenticeships/ traineeships?Further, many young people completely change theircareer ideas once they have left school as they aremore exposed to different types of occupations andindustries through employment, training and study.If you don’t know what you would like to do when youleave school- don’t stress! This just means that you areperfectly normal and that you are developing at yourown pace.FOCUS ON PATHWAYS AFTER SCHOOL:MANAGING YOUR CAREERThe following two stories highlight the differentpathways you can take and also show that you caneasily change career directions once you leave school.Both Tim and Josh worked several jobs through schoolto save money and also ran fundraisers to support thecosts of volunteering overseas.Meet Tim BennettTim’s career plan changed several times during schooland he had no firm study plans other than he knew heloved drama and business.Pathway• 2008: Completed the VCE > Volunteered in Africathrough World Youth International > climbed MountKilimanjarro• 2009: Gap Year in Poland through Latitude GlobalVolunteering teaching English in schools >employment with cousin’s printing business in China• 2010: Bachelor of Arts (Drama)/ Commerce(Economics), Deakin University• 2011: Changed courses to Bachelor ofEntrepreneurship & Innovation with a minor inChinese > opened own company called BEE >Completed the Kokoda TrekLeft: Kokoda.B left: Africa.Right: Poznan.B right: Kokoda
