Synchrotrons • Synchrotrons recirculate beams with RF only needed to restore energy lost to synchrotron radiation – High pulse rate (~100MHz) – High average current (>100mA) – Most RF power goes to producing X-rays (but maybe not in a usable phase space). • Synchrotron radiation – Cools beam: higher energy electrons emit more radiation. – Heats beam: statistics in emission of X-ray photons • Beam reaches equilibrium temperature – Vertical emittance is very good: ~.03um normalized – Horizontal emittance larger ~3um – Longitudinal phase space typically 0.1% BW X 15ps bunch – Can be described in emittance units as ~10 4 um. • Longitudinal phase space too large for X-ray FELs (LINAC -> 5um, not 10,000) • >75 light sources worldwide! • >$200M€ for large rings (and up!)
