This is the fourth youngster I’ve missed thisweek.”The Ankou is a title conferred upon the lastperson to die in a parish during the previous year. For a year, it is his duty to call on the dead and takethem wherever they wish to go, usually to Limbo.See Chapter 11: Haunted Vehicles for moreinformation on the Ankou and his two helpers. The Ankou can tell the party about three otherteenagers who have died recently undermysterious circumstances:Rosanne Chambers: Strangled while shoppingat a video store.Kip Johnson: Bled to death after seeing amidnight movie at a seedy theatre.Adam McDunn: Run through with a pitchforkwhile reading a comic book at a bus stop. The last death happened just that morning. Most likely, the party will wish to examine the places where theother deaths occurred.Bus StopThe bus stop is a semi-enclosed shelter oftinted glass with a bench inside. It is wide enoughto accommodate four people comfortably. Lostsouls can stand inside it without harm from thesun. The bus stop has been roped off and there aretwo detectives working at the scene. A chalkoutline of a body is drawn on the sidewalk, andsplashes of blood have pooled in the cracks. Thedetectives are bagging and tagging evidence, including a pitchfork and a comic book. The pitchfork has four curved prongs, each ofthem extremely bloody. It appears to be completelynormal in every other respect. The pitchfork is adual object. If touched by a lost soul, it will becomeincorporeal, disappearing from the sight of theliving. If it is released, it will re-appear as amaterial object. The comic book has been bagged and is lyingon the bus stop bench. The title reads, Farmer FelixBuys the Farm! The cover depicts a horribleskeleton dressed in coveralls and a straw hatskewering a hapless victim with a pitchfork. The detectives will take nonotice, since the creature is an Upior in incorporealform (see Chapter 7: Supernatural NPCs). This evilentity is perfectly comfortable in the sunlight.Dressed in riding breeches and carrying a whip, theUpior approaches balefully. “The pitchfork belongsto the Master,” he hisses. “You best let me have it.”If the players attempt to stop him or speak tohim, the Upior will use his whip to drag the lostsouls from their hiding place in the bus stop andinto the searing sunlight. Remember, the twodetectives will be able to see him if the Upiorassumes material form. The Upior will not leave without the pitchfork. If he retrieves it, he immediately vanishes.Otherwise, he will fight until destroyed. Ifcaptured, the Upior will say, “The Master wearsmany faces. No one knows his true name. You mayhave stopped me, but you cannot stop him fromachieving oblivion.”The AlleyTrash bins line the brick walls of this shadowyalley behind the Broadway theater, and garbagespills over into an unappealing mess. Moldingposters are heaped in a pile along with popcornboxes and snippets of film.
