Cross-border SocCross-border Social SciencePrograms in Cambodia and Lao PDRMaster of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology at the RoyalUniversity of Phnom PenhIn 2005, RCSD initiated the "Social Sciences in the Mekong Region Project: Graduate Teaching Program" underan MA in Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Phnom Penh (RUPP). The program aims to createan understanding of social sciences and development in the region, by providing RUPP students with newmethods of learning; carrying out extensive reading and discussion on theories and concepts covering socialphenomena in Southeast Asia. The courses taught are formed into teaching modules which are led by the followingcore teaching staff:• Dr. Chayan Vaddhanaphuti• Lecturer Suriya Samutakupt• Mr. Joseph RicksonYear 2006Prior to the start of the 2006 academic year, RCSDoffered a training workshop on "Qualitative ResearchMethodology" for the second-year RUPP students, aspreparation for developing their research proposals andeld research.RCSD was also involved in teaching two courses atRUPP, namely: “Qualitative and Ethnographic Methods",taught by Dr. Chayan Vaddhanaphuti and Joseph Rickson,and "Culture and Development", taught by Dr. AnanGanjanapan.Year 2007Visiting Students ProgramIn order to expose the MA students from RUPP to theacademic environment at Chiang Mai University, RCSDorganized a "Visiting Students Program" from October6th to November 5th 2007. Two taught courses, a tutorialsession, a seminar on proposal development, a eld tripto a Chiang Rai community forest, and an introduction tolibrary usage at Chiang Mai University, were all offeredto the fteen RUPP students.The following courses on "Rural Development andResource Management" and "ASEAN Societies andEconomies in Transition" were taught by lecturers fromChiang Mai University, as follows:• Rural Development and Resource Management.Dr. Chusak Wittayapak and Dr. Wattana Sugunnasil• ASEAN Societies and Economies in Transtion.Dr. Kosum Saichan and Dr. Udom Kerdpibul
