Making aDifferenceIn grade 9 Yvonne Su discovered that her Newmarketschool was not recycling because it lacked the resources.Yvonne felt a responsibility to do something about thisproblem. She and some friends and teachers decided totackle the recycling themselves. They started a recyclingand environmental club. Yvonne has been engaged inenvironmental activities ever since.“As grade nines, my friends and I didn’t knowwhere to turn to learn more about our planet, but afterspeaking to some teachers we found out that our greatestresources were right in front of us -- our science classes.”The more Yvonne and her friends learned, the morethey wanted share their knowledge. They organizedcampaigns at their school about environmental issues.They then took their campaigns to schools across Canada.What changes could be made at your school to help theenvironment?As captain of her high school’s 2007 Envirothon team,Dayna Corelli helped develop an award-winning proposalthat was reviewed by the city of Sudbury. Dayna’s teamwas concerned that water was wasted during lawnwatering and street cleaning. They were also concernedthat the city’s sewer pipe system could not handle heavyrainfall, causing storm sewers to overflow and dumpraw sewage into the Great Lakes. Since reviewing theproposal, and recommendations from other groups,Sudbury has restricted lawn watering, made streetcleaning more efficient, and improved the sewer system.Dayna was also a member of her school’sEnvironmental Club and coordinated its recyclingprogram.
