18ART DECO CHINESE CARPET FOR THE V.& A.Gold/beige ground with three central green and black deco designs based on antique Chinese motifs, 5'9" x 8'4"c.1930, probably Beijing (Peking), ChinaThis carpet was made in China during the period between 1920 and 1940, when therewas a brief flowering of inventive rug-making in Beijing, Tainjin and ShanghaiOwing to the loss of markets in Turkey, due to the First World War, carpet importand export enterprises turned to China to satisfy the needs of interior designers.It was a time of co-operation between western firms and Chinese designers whotogether produced modernist patterns for chic art deco interiors. Although many of the pieceswere destined for America and Europe, they were also used in the individually-designedhouses of fashionable Chinese, as well as in the skyscraper hotels that came to dominate theShanghai waterfront at this time.This carpet was recently purchased for the Victoria and Albert Museum with fundsfrom the Donor Friends.Verity Wilson
