The sou<strong>the</strong>rn portion of <strong>the</strong> new San Mattia, inside<strong>the</strong> barrier ring, will contain sports fields, recreational circuits, andopen-air <strong>the</strong>atres. Tidal flats and marshlands will be manufactured asa dynamic ecological zone in <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn portion of <strong>the</strong> island for<strong>the</strong> preservation and study of marine species.Taken toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>se new infrastructure elements (a submergedcity, protected cultural zones, aquacological food and energy industries,ecological preserves) will keep tourists coming to Venice. New facilitieswill be created to allow visitors to observe and study <strong>the</strong> historicalelements of <strong>the</strong> Venice <strong>Lagoon</strong> Park and its floating industrial present.Tourists will board transparent floating bubbles for one or two peoplein order to view <strong>the</strong> ecological zone and <strong>the</strong> submerged portionsof <strong>the</strong> park. In addition to allowing unrestricted views both aboveand below <strong>the</strong> water line, <strong>the</strong>se vessels’ highly performative skinwill provide information, wayfinding, and air filtration. The skinwill also act as a hydrogen-producing membrane, using artificialphotosyn<strong>the</strong>sis to split water molecules, <strong>the</strong>reby making <strong>the</strong> vesselsenergy self-sufficient.Larger hotel-like vessels for up to eight people, te<strong>the</strong>red at nodalpoints of <strong>the</strong> geomatic and informatic grid laid over <strong>the</strong> lagoon, willaccommodate longer stays in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lagoon</strong> Park.
