Case Study: A single phone call leads to court caseIn <strong>2005</strong>, the Consumer andIndustry Contact Centrereceived a telephone reportabout a consumer whoknew they had a severeallergy to nuts. Afterconsuming a pasta productpurchased frozen, whichmade no mention of nutingredients on the label,the consumer quicklysuffered a seriousanaphylactic reaction andhad to be admitted tohospital.The Contact Centrerecorded the incident andproduct in the <strong>Authority</strong>’scentral complaint system.The report was assigned tothe relevant operationalgroup. An investigation bythe Compliance Unit andEnforcement Unit revealedthat the wrong labels hadbeen applied to the productwhich did contain walnuts.The investigating officersalerted the <strong>Authority</strong>’sRecall Coordinator and thecompany immediatelyrecalled the affectedproduct. A prosecutionbrief was also prepared bythe Enforcement Unit andaction commenced in theLocal Court.In 20<strong>06</strong>, the court foundagainst the company andfined them a total of$12,500 for severalmatters, including costs.The Minister for PrimaryIndustries, the Hon. Fact sheets in English and a number of othercommunity languages were sent out about a number ofcampaigns.• The <strong>Authority</strong>’s main information web page on dioxinswas downloaded 2,270 times to 30 June 20<strong>06</strong> and, whencombined with related pages, dioxin content wasdownloaded 3,700 times.
