Future Courses (tentative)(1) Sustainable technologies (Prof. Bruce Rittman, Northwestern Universityand one or more instructors will be selected)- Society must become more sustainable, which means using less non-renewable energy andminimizing the impacts of its activities on the environment. Essential to achieving this societalgoal will be new sustainable technologies, and they will rely on advances in nanotechnology, biotechnology, and green chemistry. This short course on "sustainable technologies" willintroduce its participants to the fundamentals of these three core areas and how they can be appliedto make technology more sustainable.(2) Bio-NEMS/MEMS and Hierarchically Structured MaterialsInstructors:Junghoon Lee (Northwestern University), Rodney S. Ruoff (Northwestern University)Ilhan Aksay (Princeton University)- Innovations in materials and systems based on fundamental science and interdisciplinarycollaboration are the key objective of this course. The focus is on biological applications orbiologically inspired systems. Some of the possible topics are biologically inspired materialsstructured at the nanoscale, nanoscale chemo-mechanical interaction in sensors, and structuralbehavior of micro/nanoscale components.- Hopefully, the summer institute will be renewed by <strong>NSF</strong> for afew more years.Comments and Suggestions:summerinstitute@mail.mech.northwestern.eduhttp://tam.northwestern.edu/summerinstitute/Home.htmhttp://tam.northwestern.edu/wkl/liu.htmlDr. Ken Chong (Director of Mechanics &Materials Program, Engineering DirectorateNational Science Foundation)• Remarks on the <strong>NSF</strong> <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> onNano Mechanics and Materials• The <strong>NSF</strong> Nano Science and EngineeringProgramhttp://tam.northwestern.edu/summerinstitute/Home.htmhttp://tam.northwestern.edu/wkl/liu.html
