Library Board Meeting Minutes Page 10 of 10December 19, 2006that something that we are going to be offering the public? Other places like UNL and LincolnPublic Schools have been using that type of technology and have integrated it to save money onlicenses. You can spend a lot of money on licenses per seat. Is the Information and TechnologyPlan a good place to look for answers to these questions?Mr. Kirkpatrick, Chair of the Library Board’s Technology Committee, stated that he is not surethose questions are answered in the plan.Ms. Anderson explained that Mr. Deitemeyer’s questions and comments would be referred to theTechnology Committee.Mr. Kirkpatrick stated that he appreciated the points brought forward and they are certainlysomething to keep an eye one. A lot of the Open Source programs are made available from thelibrary as well as some of the proprietary sources. Many of the licenses for the proprietarysources are available to the public library at a fraction of the cost on the open market. One of thereasons we need to make an effort to provide both Open Source and proprietary is that the publicdemands it. If we have members of the public who want and can use Open Source such as OpenOffice we have a duty to try to provide that. The library does not want to go entirely to OpenSource because, for example, people want Microsoft. As the library moves forward, it mustalways make accommodations for the public. It is a balancing act and is what our customers arelooking for.ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
